TRENTON – A resolution sponsored by Senator Troy Singleton and Senator Christopher Bateman to request the Governor to permanently designate June 4th as “Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day” in New Jersey passed the Senate today.
The resolution, SJR-16, would raise public awareness of Tourette Syndrome and educate physicians, other health care professionals and school personnel about the condition. It would help improve the quality of life of people affected by Tourette Syndrome, and encourage the research necessary to identify its cause of the syndrome, control its effects, and find a cure.
“Raising public awareness of Tourette Syndrome is a critical step in encouraging the medical research needed to discover effective treatments, or even a cure, for those affected by this condition,” said Senator Singleton (D-Burlington). “There are more than 20,000 children in New Jersey alone facing this neurological disorder. By dedicating June 4th as ‘Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day,’ those living with this condition are brought to the forefront of our hearts and minds.”
The resolution passed the full Senate with a (38-0) vote. It next moves to the Governor for further consideration.
