NEW BRUNSWICK – On Wednesday, October 14th, Senator Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) will host a Nonprofit Roundtable Discussion with leaders from New Jersey’s non-profit organizations to identify ways to work with the State to help increase efficiency and maintain their vital services during the economic recession.
“New Jersey’s nonprofit organizations have been particularly hard hit by the recession,” said Senator Buono. “While they are facing the same declining revenue streams that face the rest of our State, they are also experiencing a dramatic increase in demand for their services.”
The nonprofit industry employs 288,000 people – more than 7% of the State’s workforce – and serves as an important driver of New Jersey’s economy. These more than 28,000 organizations provide assistance that includes social and health services, job training, and the preservation and advancement of arts and culture, among others.
“The nonprofit sector not only plays a fundamental role in providing assistance to our citizens, but it also serves as an important employment base in our State,” said Senator Buono. “It is my goal to thoroughly examine the unique circumstances facing this industry, and to identify and implement concrete solutions that will keep these organizations solvent and prevent them from cutting staff and services just when people need them the most.”
