15 Sep: Rice Clarifies Gangland Security Task Force Purpose

TRENTON – Senator Ronald L. Rice today said that the information gathering by the newly formed Gangland Security Task Force is key to dealing with the need to address New Jersey’s emerging crisis of gang violence.

“In order to win the war on gangs, New Jersey must first gather comprehensive intelligence on the gang infrastructure,” said Senator Rice, D-Essex. “I sponsored the law to create the 26-member Gangland Security Task Force, which will investigate and collect extensive information on gangs. Only when we have a complete understanding of gangs and how they operate, can we begin to devise a real plan to clean up our streets.”

15 Sep: Senator Sweeney On Gasoline Price-Gouging

TRENTON – Senator Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem, released the following statement today concerning the issue of gasoline price-gouging:

“I would like to commend Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman Wisniewski and the members of the Assembly Transportation panel for taking initiative and hosting today’s hearing to investigate gasoline price-gouging.

14 Sep: Vitale ‘Emergency Health Powers Act’ Becomes Law

JERSEY CITY – A bill sponsored by Senator Joseph F. Vitale which would give the Governor and the State Commissioner of Health greater authority to declare a public health emergency and give them access to the tools necessary to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the emergency was signed into law today.

Vitale joined Acting Governor Albio Sires when he signed the bill at Jersey City Medical Center.

13 Sep: Senator Madden Voices Support For Citizens’ Convention On Property Tax Reform

TRENTON – Senator Fred H. Madden today issued the following statement, renewing his call to action on the most important issue facing New Jersey residents, the need for a citizens’ convention to address the issue of property tax reform, following a New Jersey League of Municipalities new conference on the issue:

“Every day my legislative offices receive calls from 4th District residents who are struggling to pay bills and keep their homes, in the face of increasing property tax bills. I applaud groups like the League of Municipalities for working to keep this issue alive. I, like all New Jersey taxpayers, look forward to the day when property taxes move off the list of top concerns and onto the list of problems solved. The time for debate is over – the time for action is now.

09 Sep: Coniglio High School Community Service Program Becomes Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Joseph Coniglio, which creates a pilot program that requires high school juniors to complete 15 hours of community service, became law today.

“Sometimes the best lessons learned are life lessons that are not taught in a classroom,” said Senator Coniglio, D-Bergen. “Community service is a way for our young residents to involve themselves in a variety of enriching, useful and practical experiences which serve the neighborhood. I hope that this program will make the young people of New Jersey want to continue their involvement in their communities for the rest of their lives.”

09 Sep: Kenny Doing Well After Surgery

NEW BRUNSWICK — Senate Majority Leader Bernard F. Kenny Jr. today said he expects to be released from Robert Wood Johnson Hospital on Saturday following successful surgery for the removal of his prostate gland where cancer had been detected during a routine test.

“I had a very successful surgery and I hope to return to work in the very near future,” said Senator Kenny, D-Hudson. “I’ve been informed that my prognosis for a full recovery is excellent.”

08 Sep: Madden Measure To Allow Volunteer First Responders To Use Emergency Lights Is Now Law

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that allows responders to place emergency lights in their cars when responding to emergencies has been signed into law by Governor Richard J. Codey.

“This bill helps ensure the safety of our critical volunteer firefighters and rescue squads,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “At the same time, it enables local residents and drivers to better recognize a vehicle heading to a fire or emergency site.”

08 Sep: Baer Resigns From Senate

TRENTON – Senator Byron M. Baer today announced he is resigning from the State Senate, effective this evening.

In a one-sentence letter addressed to Acting Governor Codey, Senator Baer stated, “I officially tender my resignation as State Senator, representing District 37 in the New Jersey Legislature, effective today, September 8, 2005, at 11:59 p.m.”

07 Sep: Key Senator Calls For State Probe Of Horizon

TRENTON – Senator Barbara Buono today called for a State investigation of the business practices of Horizon Blue Cross-Blue Shield to determine whether the billion-dollar-plus capital reserve account of the nonprofit health services corporation is consistent with its charitable mission.

Citing its favorable state and federal tax treatment, Senator Buono said Horizons massive accumulation of reserve capital raises “grave concerns” that the nonprofit corporation departed from its mission to function “for the benefit of the community as a whole.”

07 Sep: Smith Landmark Diesel Reduction Measure Signed Into Law

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Bob Smith which would regulate and reduce diesel emissions in New Jersey and vastly improve the State’s air quality was signed into law today by Governor Codey.

“Today is a great day for New Jersey’s environment, because we are reclaiming our air from some of the most harmful pollutants fouling our State’s skies today,” said Senator Smith, D-Middlesex and Somerset, the Chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. “Research has shown a strong correlation between diesel emissions and a higher-than-normal incidence of respiratory disease, cardiac arrests and premature death. Without action, the future of breathable air in the Garden State was in question, but with the Governor’s signature, we’re looking ahead to safer and cleaner skies down the road.”
