30 Jan: Madden Measure To Ban The Sale Of Yo-Yo Waterballs Clears Senate Commerce Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that would ban the sale of “yo-yo waterballs,” which have been blamed for the strangulation deaths of hundreds of children in the United States was approved today by the Senate Commerce Committee.

“New Jersey ranks fourth in the nation for injuries from these yo-yo waterballs,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester, who is also a member of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. ” Passing this bill would make it clear that New Jersey takes the safety of children very seriously.”

26 Jan: Madden Measure Would Designate May As ‘Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Month’

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that would designate May of 2006 as “Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Month” was unanimously approved today by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.

“Complications due to premature birth is the leading cause of death during the first month of an infant’s life,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester, who is a member of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens panel. “It can also contribute to physical and developmental disabilities, including cerebral palsy and chronic lung disease. By dedicating the month of May to help promote the importance of prenatal care to the health and development of mothers and babies, we would be helping to save lives.”

17 Jan: Senator Madden Reacts To Swearing-In Of Governor Corzine

TRENTON – Senator Fred H. Madden released the following statement today regarding the swearing-in of Governor Jon Corzine:

15 Dec: Madden Measure to Help Prevent School Violence Recieves Final Legislative Approval

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that would provide training for safe schools resource officers and public school employees serving as liaisons to law enforcement received final legislative approval today in the Senate by a vote of 38-0.

“In emergency situations, school resource officers and teachers serve as the first line of defense for the safety of our children,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “These teachers and officers should receive the best and most comprehensive safety-training possible so that, should a dangerous or violent situation arise, they are prepared to step in and protect their students.”

12 Dec: Madden Measure to Ban Yo-Yo Waterballs Clears Senate Commerce Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that would ban the sale of “yo-yo waterballs,” which have been blamed for the strangulation deaths of hundreds of children in the United States was approved today by the Senate Commerce Committee.

“According to Consumer Product Safety Commission reports, parents have reported more than 375 injuries due to these ‘waterballs’, and 263 of them have involved suffocation due to strangulation,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “These toys are clearly dangerous and should be banned. The safety of our children must be our top priority,” said Senator Madden.

08 Dec: Vitale/Madden Measure to Require Defibrullators at Health Clubs Approved by Senate

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Fred H. Madden that would require all registered health clubs in New Jersey to be equipped with an automated external defibrillator on site and have employees trained in its use was approved today by the Senate, with a final vote of 37-1.

“In situations of cardiac arrest, rapid response is the best way to save lives,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, who Chairs the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. “Health clubs and gyms are places of high activity; activity which can often put strain on the heart. Requiring the facilities to have defibrillators could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.”

05 Dec: Madden/Karcher Measure to Help Prevent Domestic Violence And ‘Workforece Development Act’ Clears Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Fred H. Madden and Ellen Karcher that would create “The Domestic Violence and Workforce Development Initiative Act,” and require the State’s workforce development counselors to be trained to address the needs of domestic violence victims was approved today by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee.

“Domestic violence is a very real problem – a problem that can be made worse if a victim feels that he or she is helpless and trapped in a bad situation because of a lack of employment,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “By requiring workforce development counselors and unemployment officers to undergo this training, they would be able to help empower victims of domestic violence to move forward and change their lives for the better.”

01 Dec: Karcher / Madden / Weinberg Cancer Prevention Task Force Bill Advances

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Ellen Karcher, Fred H. Madden and Loretta Weinberg which would create a task force on cancer prevention, early detection and treatment in New Jersey was approved today by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee by a vote of 7-0.

“In the past, cancer was viewed as a death sentence to anyone diagnosed with it, but now, with early detection and proper treatment, it can be beaten,” said Senator Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer. “Through the task force, we hope to promote healthy choices by those at-risk of cancer, to give them the best shot possible of surviving the disease. For those already diagnosed, we want to provide the best treatment options, so that we have more people living with cancer rather than dying from cancer.”

01 Dec: Turner / Madden Bill To Allow Income Taxpayers To Contribute To Leukemia And Lymphoma Research Advances

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Shirley K. Turner and Fred H. Madden which would allow New Jersey residents to voluntarily contribute to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society when filing their State income tax returns was approved by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee today by a vote of 7-0.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society provides a number of services to patients living with the cancer and their families, and is dedicated to finding a cure,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “They’re a strictly voluntary health organization that does so much to help the people of New Jersey. Now, the people will have a chance to give back, by filling out a voluntary contribution section on their annual gross income tax form.”
