26 Sep: Madden/Bryant Measure To Help Combat Kidney Disease Is Now Law

WILLIAMSTOWN – A measure sponsored by Senators Fred H. Madden and Wayne R. Bryant that would require clinical laboratories to help with early kidney disease detection by monitoring creatinine levels in patients blood was signed into law today by Governor Richard J. Codey at the St. Matthew’s Baptist Church Community Development Center.

“Early detection is the key to ending the scourge of kidney disease,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Identifying kidney disease in its earliest stages will allow patients to receive the treatment they need to stall the disease and enable them to lead longer, healthier lives.”

22 Sep: Sweeny/Madden Measure To Help Combat Identity Theft Is Now Law

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Steve Sweeney and Fred H. Madden that prohibits the use of scanning and re-encoding devices which are often used to gain illegal access to encoded information on ATM, credit, debit and other electronic payment cards was signed into law today by Governor Richard J. Codey.

“Anyone with access to re-encoding equipment and someone else’s credit card can become an identity thief,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “This new law will work to help protect consumers from having their identities stolen, and incurring sky-high credit card debt.”

13 Sep: Senator Madden Voices Support For Citizens’ Convention On Property Tax Reform

TRENTON – Senator Fred H. Madden today issued the following statement, renewing his call to action on the most important issue facing New Jersey residents, the need for a citizens’ convention to address the issue of property tax reform, following a New Jersey League of Municipalities new conference on the issue:

“Every day my legislative offices receive calls from 4th District residents who are struggling to pay bills and keep their homes, in the face of increasing property tax bills. I applaud groups like the League of Municipalities for working to keep this issue alive. 08 Sep: Madden Measure To Allow Volunteer First Responders To Use Emergency Lights Is Now Law

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that allows responders to place emergency lights in their cars when responding to emergencies has been signed into law by Governor Richard J. Codey.

“This bill helps ensure the safety of our critical volunteer firefighters and rescue squads,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “At the same time, it enables local residents and drivers to better recognize a vehicle heading to a fire or emergency site.”

23 Aug: Buono/Madden Bill To Establish State Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign Is Now Law

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Barbara Buono and Fred H. Madden to establish a State domestic violence public awareness campaign was signed into law today by Governor Richard J. Codey.

“Through education and awareness we can combat the specter of domestic violence in New Jersey and help women reduce its harmful aspect,” said Senator Buono, D-Middlesex. “We will empower women by teaching them the warning signs of being in a violent relationship and how to remove themselves from danger before they become victims of domestic violence. For those who are already victims, we will show them how to seek counseling and find a safe, healthy place to live so that they can begin the healing process.”

22 Aug: Buono/Madden Ban On Smoking In University Dorms Signed Into Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Barbara Buono and Fred H. Madden that would require students at New Jerseys colleges and universities to go outside to light up their cigarettes was signed into law today by Governor Richard J. Codey.

“College students will be able to breathe easier this fall, both from the cleaner air in their rooms and the knowledge that one more safety hazard has been reduced,” said Senator Barbara Buono, D-Middlesex. “Students at our public colleges and universities should realize that while they have the right to choose to smoke and chance the risks that come along with it, they don’t have the right to make those choices for their neighbors. This law will drastically reducing the chance of a dorm fire and diminish exposure to second-hand smoke.”

11 Aug: Sweeney/Madden ‘GPS’ Bill Is Now Law

WOODBURY – A measure sponsored by Senators Stephen M. Sweeney and Fred H. Madden that would create a two year pilot program for the satellite-based tracking of sex offenders and appropriate $3 million to fund the program was signed into law today by Governor Richard J. Codey at the Gloucester County Criminal Justice Complex in Woodbury.

“In an emergency situation, a GPS tracking device can serve as a preventative tool to alert police, so they can step in and rescue the children before they are assaulted,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, 44% percent of rape victims are under the age of 18. The system was failing our children, and that’s why Senator Madden and I had to sponsor this measure – for the kids of New Jersey. Our children are too important not to take every precaution to keep them safe from these dangerous predators.”

14 Jul: Madden Measure To Forgive Student Loans For Social Workers Is Now Law

TRENTON -A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that establishes the “Social Services Student Loan Redemption Act,” to help forgive student loan burdens of up to $20,000 over four years for full-time direct health care professionals was signed into law today by Governor Richard J. Codey.

“For many recent graduates, student loan debt is a burden that could prevent them from working in the State’s social services positions because of the lower salaries offered in the public sector,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “State social work programs are not able to offer employees the higher salaries they would earn in private social work programs, so we have to offer candidates a different incentive. This measure allows the State to better compete with the private sector for qualified social workers.”

23 Jun: Sweeney / Madden GPS’ Bill Clears Senate Budget And Appropriations Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Stephen M. Sweeney and Fred H. Madden that would create a two-year pilot program which would use satellite-based tracking to keep track of convicted sex offenders was unanimously approved today by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee.

“As a parent, my first priority is to help ensure the safety of my children,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. ” As a legislator, I have a responsibility to help protect the children of New Jersey, which is exactly what this bill would do. The GPS tracking would let law enforcement officers know sex offenders’ whereabouts at all times, which would help keep them away from children.”

“This measure is about using preventative measures to help save lives,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “By working to identify kidney disease and other life-threatening disorders in their early stages, doctors will be able to help patients begin treatment as soon as they are diagnosed, and it will allow them to help the patients to live longer, healthier lives.”
