31 Mar: Beach/Madden Legislation Prohibiting Discrimination Against Unemployed Signed Into Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Jim Beach (D-Camden) and Fred Madden (D-Gloucester, Camden) that would prohibit an employer or an employer’s agent, representative or designee from advertising a job vacancy that disqualifies unemployed individuals from applying was signed into law today.

“For the countless residents who lost their jobs through no fault of their own, these ads just add insult to injury, especially when they see an opening for which they would be a perfect fit,” said Beach. “Businesses that make it a point to exclude the unemployed from consideration are not only passing up on the chance to attract qualified candidates, but are only making the employment picture worse for the entire state.”

23 Mar: Beach, Greenstein, Vainieri Huttle Unveil Bill To Augment School Bus Safety Laws

TRENTON – Senators Jim Beach and Linda Greenstein and Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle have introduced legislation that would augment criminal background checks for school bus personnel to include all adults given responsibility for the safety of school children, closing a loophole that had left bus aides free from scrutiny.

The measure also would enhance penalties against any employee found tampering with a school bus’ on-board monitoring device.

Beach said the changes were spurred in part by last year’s arrest of a Waterford School District bus aide on allegations that he had repeatedly molested a young girl. While the accused did not have a criminal record, Beach said the incident highlighted the loophole that left bus aides out from the background check requirements.

Changing the unemployment benefits trigger will help do that. We will certainly look towards other measures to create jobs and economic growth, but this is a good step towards helping those who need it,” said Madden.

17 Feb: Gordon/Beach Legislation To Make Municipal Merger Studies Easier Clears Senate

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Bob Gordon (D-Bergen) and Jim Beach (D-Camden) that would make it easier for municipalities to study the possibility of merging was approved today by the full Senate.

This bill stems from a grassroots attempt to gain approval to form a study commission to examine whether Merchantville and Cherry Hill can consolidate municipal services. Earlier this year, a group of Merchantville and Cherry Hill residents undertook an effort to form a Municipal Consolidation Study Commission. In Merchantville, the residents collected signatures and sent a petition to the Local Finance Board, an affiliate of the Department of Community Affairs. In Cherry Hill, the town council submitted a resolution to undertake a consolidation study. According to the Board, however, current law requires the same method of application from each community. Consequently, the applications were rejected.
