18 Dec: Greenstein Road Rage Awareness Legislation Advances

TRENTON – In an effort to bring awareness to the dangers of driving aggressively, a bill sponsored by Senator Linda R. Greenstein that would teach New Jersey’s new drivers the risks of road rage was approved yesterday by the Senate Transportation Committee.

“Preparing for and getting a driver’s license can be an exciting time for young New Jerseyans, but understanding the dangers of the road is essential for the safety of those drivers, particularly with New Jersey’s very congested roadways,” said Senator Greenstein, D-Midddlesex and Mercer. “Experience is key when handling aggressive driving on the roads – from tailgating to erratic lane changes – and new drivers just don’t have the experience yet. Ensuring that driver’s education courses take the time to teach young drivers how to recognize and handle these situations will begin to prepare them for what to expect when they hit the road.”

06 Dec: Greenstein-Beach Measure To Connect Military Emts With Civilian Jobs Approved In Law & Public Safety Committee

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Linda R. Greenstein and Jim Beach that would strengthen the state’s supply of EMTs and paramedics while connecting veterans with jobs in New Jersey was unanimously approved today by the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee.

“The men and women who have served as EMTs and paramedics in the Armed Forces have received fantastic training and have proven their skills on the battlefield, yet we currently require them to undergo duplicative and unnecessary training to get a job once they return home,” said Senator Greenstein, D-Middlesex and Mercer, Vice Chairwoman of the Committee. “By streamlining the certification process for well-trained and qualified veterans and active-duty military personnel, we can help our returning heroes transition into civilian life, while providing patients with high-quality level of care.”

06 Dec: Turner/Greenstein Bill Aimed At Ending Corruption Related To No-Bid Government Contracts Clears Committee

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Shirley K. Turner and Linda R. Greenstein that would require greater transparency in the awarding of government contracts cleared the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee today.

The bill, S1517, would require that contracts for professional and technical services that are awarded by a state agency, including independent authorities, or by counties, municipalities, and school districts, be awarded by a competitive negotiating process. Turner first introduced the bill in 2005 to address concerns over political corruption and the impact that no-bid contracts have on the cost of government services.

25 Oct: Greenstein-Beach Measure To Allow Military Spouses To Receive Nursing Licenses Heads To Governor

TRENTON – In response to First Lady Michelle Obama’s and Dr. Jill Biden’s call to increase professional license portability from one state to the next, legislation sponsored by Senators Linda R. Greenstein and Jim Beach that would provide nursing licenses to qualified nonresident military spouses was unanimously approved today by the Senate.

“More than 100,000 military spouses across the country hold professional licenses with tens of thousands being licensed nurses,” said Senator Greenstein, D-Middlesex and Mercer. “These men and women sacrifice every day as their husbands and wives serve our country both domestically and overseas. By breaking down barriers to employment, we can show our support for these families, provide them with a path to a good job as the move into New Jersey and bring more qualified nurses into our state’s hospitals, doctor’s offices and health care clinics.”

15 Oct: Greenstein-Smith Bill To Train Students How To Convert Cars To Alternative Fuel Vehicles Approved By Senate Environment Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Linda R. Greenstein and Bob Smith that would encourage colleges and vocational schools to train students how to convert gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles to low- and zero-emission vehicles was approved today by the Senate Environment and Energy Committee.

“As gasoline prices remain high, the sales of alternative fuel cars are seeing a surge in the Garden State. Many New Jerseyans are starting to realize that electric, propane and compressed natural gas vehicles provide cleaner, cheaper alternatives to traditionally-powered vehicles,” said Senator Greenstein, D-Middlesex and Mercer, and Vice Chair of the Committee. “By encouraging our community colleges and vocational schools to teach students how to convert traditionally-powered vehicles to use alternative fuel, our students will be at the forefront on this technology and will be prepared to enter into a workforce where these skills will be valued and needed.”

20 Sep: Smith-Greenstein Bill To Review Clean Car Standards Clears Committee

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Bob Smith and Linda R. Greenstein that would create a commission to encourage the state to adopt incentives to purchase clean cars and to advise the state Department of Environmental Protection on low vehicle emission standards was unanimously approved today by the Senate Environment and Energy Committee.

“The state has been tasked with reducing vehicle emissions that can cause serious health problems to our residents as well as vastly damage our state’s air quality. It is important that we take stock of where we are in the process and what steps we must take to ensure that we are doing all we can to improve New Jersey’s air quality,” said Senator Smith, D-Middlesex and Somerset, and Chairman of the Environment Committee. “Additionally, with the creation of this Commission, we can encourage more New Jerseyans to purchase low and zero emission vehicles that will not only reduce our state’s dependence on foreign oil, but also release fewer pollutants into the atmosphere, reducing our state’s carbon footprint.”

20 Sep: Greenstein Bill To Protect Consumer’s Rebates And Refunds Approved By Commerce Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Linda R. Greenstein that would change regulations on mailed rebates to ensure consumers’ refunds are not lost in the mail or accidently thrown out at home was approved by the Senate Commerce Committee today.

“Often consumers make their purchasing decisions factoring in the money saved by rebates and refunds promised by the manufacturer or the retailer,” said Senator Greenstein, D-Middlesex and Mercer. “But some of these refunds are coming in innocuous packaging attached to postcards that look like junk mail. By simply requiring that these refunds come in an envelope, we can ensure that the consumers are receiving the rebates that they are expecting.”
