21 May: Vitale-Weinberg Bill To Reorganize And Ensure Funding For Center For Nursing Advances In Committee

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Loretta Weinberg which would reorganize the New Jersey Collaborating Center for Nursing and provide a permanent funding source was unanimously approved by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee today.

“In order to provide high-quality health care in the Garden State, we need to have a well-trained, adaptable nursing workforce,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, the Chair of the Health panel. “To that end, the Collaborating Center for Nursing has been an invaluable partner in keeping the nursing industry in New Jersey on top of the latest medical advances and treatment options available. We want to ensure that they will be able to continue their mission well into the future.”

21 May: Weinberg Measure To Bring More Health Care Providers To Urban And Rural Towns

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg to expand the State’s partial loan reimbursement program to include additional primary care practitioners who practice in underserved areas was approved by the Senate Education Committee today.

“There is a shortage of health practitioners in many urban and rural communities throughout New Jersey,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “By extending the current loan reimbursement program we can help bring health services to our underserved areas.”

21 May: Weinberg Bill To Revamp VCC Board Advances In Senate

TRENTON – The Senate Judiciary Committee today approved a bill, sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg, D-Bergen, that would streamline a State board designed to provide financial awards to crime victims.

“This bill (S-218) will re-focus a good agency that got out of shape in middle age,” said Senator Weinberg. “”We want to ensure that victims of crime get the attention they deserve.”

11 May: Preview – Senate Committees To Consider Public Wi-Fi, Spam Message Prevention On Monday

TRENTON – Six Senate Committees will hold meetings on Monday as they consider a full slate of bills including a measure that would authorize counties to develop broadband networks to provide wireless internet access as well as legislation to require the mandatory audit of election results in randomly selected districts.

In the Senate Economic Growth Committee, legislation sponsored by Senators Joseph V. Doria, Stephen M. Sweeney and Shirley K. Turner will be discussed that would permit counties to use existing utility authorities to develop broadband wireless networks. Subscribers to these networks would be able to access the internet from multiple places within a given county without having to subscribe to multiple carriers. The Committee will meet at10 a.m. in Committee Room 1 of the State House Annex.

10 May: Weinberg/Karcher Measure To Require Education On Hpv Clears Senate Health, Human Services And Senior Citizens Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Loretta Weinberg and Ellen Karcher that would require information about human papillomavirus (HPV) be distributed to pediatricians, parents and guardians of students in grades seven through twelve was unanimously approved today by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HPV is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted, and they can infect the genital area of men and women. The virus can cause the growth of abnormal cells in the cervix, which if left untreated, can become cancerous. HPV has been detected in over 90% of cervical cancer cases.

10 May: Weinberg/Coniglio Measure To Create County Offices Of Disability Services Clears Senate Health Panel

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Loretta Weinberg and Joseph Coniglio which would permit any county in the State to establish an office of disability services was unanimously approved today by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.

“According to the State Office of Legislative Services, New Jersey is home to nearly 1.4 million disabled residents,” said Senator Weinberg D-Bergen. “Offices of Disability Services already exist in 18 of the State’s 21 counties, but this bill would provide a definite funding source to allow the existing programs to continue to operate, while establishing new offices to provide services in the three remaining counties.”

12 Mar: Weinberg Bill To Provide Tax Breaks For ‘Extreme Home Makeover’ Style Renovations

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg that would allow municipalities to grant short-term tax exemption for disabled residents who receive home renovations from charitable groups or volunteer labor received unanimous final legislative approval today in the Senate.

“I sponsored this bill to address situations where groups like the television show ‘Extreme Home Makeover’ come in and make millions of dollars worth of renovations to homes, and then because of the increased value of the home residents are not able to pay the high property taxes,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “The people who receive these home renovations are selected because the costs exceed what they would be able to afford themselves. We want the recipients of these home renovations to be able to enjoy them, without having to struggle to come up with extra money for increased taxes while having to make ends meet.”

05 Mar: Madden/Weinberg Bill To Help State Buildings Conserve Energy Clears Senate Economic Growth Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Fred H. Madden and Loretta Weinberg that would require all new State buildings to be designed in to meet national Green Building energy conservation performance standards was unanimously approved today by the Senate Economic Growth Committee.

Buildings are considered “green” if they meet enhanced standards in the areas of sustainable site planning; safeguarding water quality and increasing water efficiency; energy efficiency and renewable energy; conservation of materials and resources; and indoor environmental quality.

26 Feb: Weinberg’s ‘Patricia’s Law’ Clears Senate Law & Public Safety And Veterans’ Affairs Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg known as “Patricia’s Law,” which would work to help law enforcement personnel locate and safely return missing persons to their families was unanimously approved today by the Senate Law & Public Safety and Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

The legislation is named for Patricia Viola, a Bogota woman who disappeared from her kitchen in 2001. The case is considered high risk because Patricia takes medication to control her epilepsy. Patricia’s husband, Jim Viola, was present at today’s meeting, and he testified before the committee.
