TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg that would exempt rape and domestic victim counselors from having to testify in criminal cases was unanimously approved today by the Senate.

” Studies have shown that having a trusting victim-counselor relationship is essential for assault survivors during the healing process,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “This legislation would allow victims to fully confide in their counselors at all times and know that any information given will not have to be re-counted in a court of law.”

21 Jun: Weinberg’s ‘Independence, Choice And Dignity In Long-Term Care Act’ Is Now Law

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg that will help give elderly and disabled New Jerseyans receiving Medicaid assistance the option of receiving government aid for long-term health care while living in the comfort of their own homes was signed into law today by Governor Corzine during an AARP Long-Term Care summit held at the Trenton Marriott. Senator Weinberg was on hand to answer questions on the bill.

“This is a proud day for elderly and disabled Medicaid recipients statewide,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “This legislation is long overdue. The State does not have the right to tell Medicaid recipients that they can no longer live in their homes simply because they are in need of medical assistance. This law will make it possible for these New Jerseyans to remain in their own homes and receive the medical care they need.”

“It is incredibly unfair to tell someone that they cannot live in the home where they raised their children, the home that holds so many memories, simply because they are in need of assistance,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “This measure would allow older and disabled New Jerseyans to live in the homes they’ve worked so hard to buy and keep, while receiving the medical care they need.”

15 Jun: Vitale-Weinberg Bill To Ensure Access To Outpatient Cancer Care Advances

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Loretta Weinberg which would require outpatient cancer care facilities to provide services to patients without regard to pay or source of payment was approved by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee today by a vote of 5-0, with one abstention.

“Whether you’re young, old, rich or poor, cancer doesn’t discriminate, and is an equal-opportunity disease that strikes all segments of the population,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, the chair of the health panel. “Our State’s outpatient cancer treatment and testing facilities shouldn’t discriminate either. We need to ensure that everyone, regardless of their economic situation, has access to the best cancer care that New Jersey has to offer.”

“The time period immediately following an attack, once a victim decides to step up and report the assault is critical to the healing process. Many victims choose to work through their pain in secret for fear of ridicule, especially in public, high profile cases, but what they don’t realize is that silence allows the violent behavior to continue,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen, who is a member of the Senate Judiciary panel. “This legislation would allow victims to fully confide in their counselors in the presence of police officers and know that information given to counselors in confidentiality will, by law, remain confidential.”

18 May: Senate Approves Doria/Weinberg Measure To Create ‘Genocide Awareness Week’

TRENTON – The Senate today unanimously approved a measure sponsored by Senators Joseph V. Doria, Jr. and Loretta Weinberg to designate May 19-25, 2006 as “Genocide Awareness Week” in New Jersey.

“One of our greatest obligations in the brotherhood of humanity is to stand up against atrocious injustices committed in the name of ethnic, religious or national purity,” said Senator Doria, D-Hudson. “Genocide is an affront to the basic tenets of humanitarianism, and we should stand, and with one loud, clear voice decry any attempts to rid this world of one of its peoples as morally reprehensible. The actions of madmen conducted on this planet in the name of genocide have an impact on all of us, and we have a collective responsibility to express outrage wherever it should rear its ugly head.”
