28 Jun: Cunningham And Stack Sign-Off On Budget With Promise Of Restored Funds For Residents

TRENTON – State Senators Sandra Bolden Cunningham (D-Hudson) and Brian Stack (D-Hudson) today announced that they voted for the FY2011 budget, citing significant givebacks and concessions on the governor’s part to restore funds to programs which benefit the State’s poorest and neediest residents.

As the deadline to pass the State budget quickly approaches, and with the threat of State Government going into a full shutdown, local officials agreed that concessions made recently by Governor Christie are a sign that both sides of the political aisle are working together to help New Jerseyans get through these tough financial times.

According to the State Constitution, a balanced budget must be passed by June 30. Gov. Christie had promised to shut down the government if such is not the case. The recent compromise on $180.7 million to Governor Christie’s $29.3 billion budget will be matched with cuts in other areas or generated by new revenue sources.

TRENTON – The full Senate today approved a measure sponsored by Senators Nicholas J. Sacco and Sandra B. Cunningham calling for a plan of action to ensure that the Port of New York and New Jersey remains a major destination point for worldwide cargo by addressing shipping clearance limitations at the Bayonne Bridge.

“Without action to address this issue, the region stands to lose roughly 270,000 jobs generated by the Port of New York and New Jersey” said Sen. Sacco (D-Bergen/Hudson). “If we don’t ease the restricted shipping access at the Bayonne Bridge, New Jersey will face a huge competitive disadvantage that would have far-reaching implications on our economy.”

08 Feb: Rice/Cunningham Measures To Examine Opportunities For Minority And Women-Owned Businesses Clear Senate Committees

TRENTON – Two measures sponsored by Senators Ronald L. Rice and Sandra Bolden Cunningham which would examine and help to increase opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses were today approved by Senate committees.

One measure, S-95, which was unanimously approved by the Senate Education Committee, would direct the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) to examine and compile biannual reports detailing the number of school construction contracts that have been awarded to minority and women-owned businesses. The reports would have to include information on the total value of the contracts, and the percentage of those contracts as they relate to the total number that have been awarded by the SDA over the six months prior to the issuance of the report. Reports would be submitted to the Governor and the Joint Budget Oversight Committee.

“It is only fitting that we make sure minority and women-owned businesses have a seat at the table when it comes to awarding these school construction contracts,” said Senator Rice, D-Essex. “These communities contain a great deal of talent; talent that is often passed over when these contracts are being considered. By requiring the Schools Development Authority to maintain this list, we would help to ensure that all of the State’s qualified talent is given an opportunity to excel.”

“Through this bill, we are hoping to level the playing field when it comes to awarding school construction contracts here in New Jersey,” said Senator Cunningham, D-Hudson. “It’s not as if there is a lack of qualified minority and women-owned construction companies, but too often, these businesses are not given the opportunity to compete for these lucrative contracts. By requiring the issuance of these reports, and requiring them to be reviewed by the Joint Budget Oversight Committee and the Governor, we would be establishing a two-tiered system of oversight, to ensure that equal access to school construction contracts is granted.”

28 Jan: Rice/Cunningham Law Will Help Level The Economic Playing Field For Women And Minorities

TRENTON – A new law sponsored by Senators Ronald L. Rice and Sandra B. Cunningham was signed recently creating economic parity for women and minorities by ensuring that they benefit from publicly funded construction contracts.

“This is about empowering people to help themselves,” said Sen. Rice (D-Essex). “Although everyone around the country is feeling the effects of the recession, women and minorities are typically more affected by poverty and plummeting unemployment rates. The best thing the state can do to help our communities in need is to increase access to training and job opportunities through a more equitable disbursement of public funds.”

11 Jan: Cunningham Bill To Return Camden To Local Control Approved

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Sandra Bolden Cunningham which would return most of the operations of the City of Camden to local control was approved by the Assembly today by a vote of 45-31, with final legislative approval pending in the Senate later today.

“It’s time that the City of Camden be once again allowed to choose its own destiny,” said Senator Cunningham, D-Hudson. “At a time when we’re trying to rebuild our Statewide economy across the board, we need to empower Camden City officials to make the sort of choices we have to make at the State level to ensure real economic recovery. Through this legislation, the State may continue on as a partner in rebuilding Camden, but to paraphrase that old saying, the buck stops at the Mayor’s Office.”
