16 Oct: Turner Measure Would Deny Development Subsidies To Employers Of Illegal Aliens

TRENTON – The Senate Labor Committee gave unanimous approval today to legislation sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner that would deny state and local development subsidies to any business found to employee illegal aliens.

“Development subsidies are only effective if the company receiving those funds reinvests them into the community,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “When companies receive loans, grants and tax breaks it is with the intention of creating more jobs and expanding the local tax base. When illegal aliens are employed instead, our communities lose all of the benefits of these subsidies.”

04 Oct: Turner Renews Call To Pass New Truck Ban For Local Roads

TRENTON – Senator Shirley K. Turner today announced that she would redouble her efforts to pass her legislation putting a new truck ban in place now that the U.S. Supreme Cout has made a final ruling that that State’s truck ban is illegal.

“It’s just plain wrong to let huge trucks risk the lives of children walking to school or parents dropping their kids off at daycare,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer and a long-standing supporter of truck restrictions on local roads and highways. “There is nothing more important than the safety of our citizens and we cannot let this decision cow us into allowing trucks to run roughshod over every New Jersey road.”

12 Sep: Senator Lesniak To Testify Before Death Penalty Commission Tomorrow

TRENTON – Senator Raymond J. Lesniak will testify before the New Jersey Death Penalty Study Commission tomorrow, arguing that the costs of the death penalty far outweigh its benefits.

“Studies have proven that the financial costs of the death penalty far exceed the costs of incarcerating someone for life,” said Senator Lesniak, D-Union. “But there are less tangible costs that go beyond money – costs to the American ideals of justice and equality. The Study Commission provides the State with an opportunity to fully examine these costs.”

28 Jul: Turner: Governor’s Kickoff Must Lead To A Score

TRENTON – Senator Shirley K. Turner today praised Governor Corzine’s address to the Legislature for providing an “excellent kickoff” to finding property tax relief and reform.

But the Mercer County Democrat said it is now up to the Legislature to produce results.

“We’ve got to bring the ball down the field now and make sure we score,” Senator Turner said. “Property tax relief and reform are the only acceptable results of our efforts because our people are rightfully out of patience.”

08 Jul: Turner Statement On Passage Of Fy07 Budget

TRENTON – Senate President Pro Tempore Shirley K. Turner made the following statement this morning following the passage of the FY07 Budget by the full Senate:

“As Governor Corzine said Thursday morning, we must not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. This budget is far from perfect, but it is good – good for a state that needs to get its financial house in order, good for the thousands of workers and businesses hurt by the shutdown, and good for homeowners in need of property tax relief.

26 Jun: Turner/Buono/Smith Bill To Require Local Notice For Hazardous Clean-Ups Receives Final Legislative Approval

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Shirley K. Turner, Barbara Buono and Bob Smith that would require that local governments be notified any time a hazardous site remediation is performed within the boundaries of the municipality was approved by both houses of the Legislature today, clearing the way for its enactment.

“It boggles the mind to think that that this type of communication doesn’t automatically occur,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “But after it took six months for DEP to let Hamilton Township know that contaminated concrete had been used in construction at the American Metro office complex, it became clear that the Legislature had to require such notices. When it comes to environmental contamination, we can’t take any short cuts in addressing the problem and protecting residents from health dangers.”

26 Jun: Senate Approves Turner Measure To Allow Students To Self-Administer Emergency Epinephrine

TRENTON – The Senate approved legislation today sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner that would expand the list of those individuals authorized to administer emergency epinephrine at a school to include more school personnel and the allergic students themselves.

“An allergic reaction can go from manageable to disastrous in a matter of minutes, and timely administration of epinephrine can be the difference between life and death,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer and Chair of the Senate Education Committee. “Children who face the threat of anaphylactic shock every day are more likely than not trained in how to use an ‘epi-pen’ when necessary. It makes no sense to stop them from doing so while in school.”

23 Jun: Turner Introduces Measure To Recover Subsidies From Companies Employing Undocumented Workers

TRENTON – Senate President Pro Tempore Shirley K. Turner introduced legislation yesterday that would require that companies employing undocumented aliens pay back any development subsidies they receive from a state or local governmental entity.

“We spend tens of millions of dollars in subsidies to businesses with the promise that they will create new jobs and bolster the New Jersey economy,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “When these companies go and hire illegal aliens to fill these new jobs, they are violating that agreement and ultimately defrauding the taxpayers of New Jersey. Those companies who break the law have no right to retain the benefits of a development grant.”

19 Jun: Turner: Business Development Subsidies Must Show Results

TRENTON – The Senate approved legislation today sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner that would require businesses receiving development subsidies from the State to submit information that would allow the State to monitor the effectiveness of those programs.

“New Jersey spends millions of dollars each year on tax breaks and subsidies to lure businesses to New Jersey,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “Programs like the Business Employment Incentive Program (BEIP) and the Business Retention and Relocation Assistance Grant (BRRAG) Program, are funded year after year because of claims that they help create new jobs in New Jersey. As budgets continue to look tight for the future, we need to prove that the programs we fund really do pay off with job growth.”

08 Jun: Senate Education Committee Approves Turner/Girgenti Bill To Protect Private School Educators

TRENTON – The Senate Education Committee today gave unanimous approval to legislation sponsored by Senators Shirley Turner and John Girgenti that would define any assault on a nonpublic school teacher or administrator as an aggravated assault.

“Whether an individual teaches in a public or private school, they should enjoy the same protections against bodily harm while performing their duties,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer and Chair of the Committee. “Just because a parent pays tuition for their student to attend a school, it doesn’t give that student any more of a right to assault the faculty of that school.”
