25 Apr: Turner Wants To Bring Out The Big Guns In Fight Against Gas Prices

TRENTON – State gas price-gouging laws “need more teeth” said Senate President Pro Tempore Shirley K. Turner today as the State and local authorities take on the crisis caused by skyrocketing gas prices.

“New Jersey drivers are at the breaking point,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “While the Bush Administration is paying lip service to the crisis in Washington, New Jersey is taking action and fighting back. Unfortunately right now it’s like taking on a tank with a BB gun. We need to better arm our local officials to win this battle.”

19 Apr: Turner: Hearings Needed On School Election Issue

TRENTON – Senator Shirley K. Turner agreed today to call hearings shortly by her Senate Education Committee on what election cycle Spring school board votes should be shifted to “so as to never repeat the dismal turnouts we just witnessed statewide.”

As Chair of the Senate Education panel, Senator Turner, D-Mercer, said the hearings could begin over the next two months to weigh multiple legislative proposals such as her bill to shift the school board elections to the date of the November general election.

17 Apr: Turner Measure To Ensure School Fiscal Accountability Becomes Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner to create the “School District Fiscal Accountability Act” to provide loans to school districts like Willingboro, which are running deficits, became law today.

“This law is designed to help handle the problems that arise when a school district encounters financial problems related to poor fiscal management or oversight,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer, and Chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee. “The ‘School District Fiscal Accountability Act’ empowers the State to step in when school districts run a deficit, and help the school turn around their specific economic situation without having to completely take over the day-to-day operations of the school district.”

21 Mar: Turner Reaction To The Corzine Budget

TRENTON – State Senate President Pro Tempore Shirley K. Turner, D-Mercer and a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, made the following statement today following Governor Corzine’s Budget Address:

“I am honestly very concerned with where this proposed budget takes New Jersey. It takes no action to reduce our local over reliance on property taxes. By keeping school and municipal aid flat once again, this budget proposal continues to place the financial burden on seniors and working families to fund local programs and schools.

20 Mar: Turner Bill To Bail Out School Districts Running A Deficit Receives Final Legislative Approval

TRENTON – Senator Shirley K. Turner welcomed final approval today by the Senate for the “School District Fiscal Accountability Act” which would set into place a process by which the State would provide loans to school districts running budget deficits, such as Willingboro School District.

“We realize that schools are run by administrators and school board members who occasionally make mistakes. But a mistake of this magnitude must come with consequences and a plan to ensure that the mistake is not repeated,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer and Chair of the Senate Education Committee. “We are taking a measured approach to addressing local deficits and putting into place monitors and safeguards to provide fiscal stability.”

Turner welcomed approval today by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee of the “School District Fiscal Accountability Act” which would set into place a process by which the State would provide loans to school districts like Willingboro, which are running deficits.

“Every child in the State of New Jersey deserves a quality education, and poor fiscal management by a local school board should not jeopardize that education,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer and Chair of the Senate Education Committee. “At the same time, it’s not fair to other school districts to simply bail out Willingboro. There must be oversight that comes with the additional aid, so the district will not repeat its mistakes.”

02 Mar: Turner Measure To Encourage Abbott District Home Ownership Moves Forward

TRENTON – Senator Shirley K. Turner welcomed committee approval today of her legislation that would create a down-payment assistance program for teachers, police officers, firefighters and sanitation workers employed by an Abbott district who purchase a home within that district.

“The salaries of police officers, teachers, firefighters and sanitation workers comprise a significant part of our Abbott districts’ budgets,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “We should encourage those individuals to live within the municipality they serve and become an active participant in the city’s revitalization efforts.”

28 Feb: Turner Introduces New Truck Ban For Local Roads

EWING – Senator Shirley K. Turner, a long-standing supporter of truck restrictions on local roads and highways, announced that she has reintroduced legislation banning all trucks from all roads other than interstate highways, the NJ Turnpike or the Atlantic City Expressway.

“Tractor-trailer trucks simply make our local highways and roads less safe,” said Senator Turner. “In my district alone, I know of state highways that are already packed enough during rush hours without tons of trucks adding to the congestion. Our residents deserve to have safer roads that are truck free.”

27 Feb: Senate Passes Turner Bill To Ban Junk Food In Schools

TRENTON – The Senate today approved a bill, sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner, which she says is designed to “Stop sugar-coating the nutritional needs of our schoolchildren.”

The measure, S-1218, would ban the sale or donation of soda, gum and most candy as well as food listing sugar as a first ingredient on school grounds before the end of the school day. It passed 33-0 and was forwarded to the Assembly.

27 Feb: Turner Resolution Would Designate March As ‘Women’s History Month’

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senate President Pro Tempore Shirley K. Turner that would help celebrate women by designating March of each year as “Women’s History Month” was unanimously approved today by the full Senate.

“Women have made so many significant contributions to society and the world as a whole, and I feel it’s only appropriate to set at least one month aside to celebrate our strides and accomplishments,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “Look at Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King and Betty Friedan, three phenomenal women that we’ve just recently lost. These women paved the way for women like myself and sacrificed so much to help ensure the equal treatment of blacks and women in this country.”
