07 Dec: Sweeney-Madden Bill To Protect The Jobs Of Volunteer Emergency Responders Advances In Committee

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney and Senate Labor Committee Chairman, Senator Fred H. Madden which would create job protections for volunteer emergency responders was approved by the Senate Law, Public Safety and Veterans Affairs Committee by a vote of 4-0, with one abstention.

“Our brave first responders deserve a little consideration from their employers when they’re active in responding to the call of duty,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “This bill makes sure that when emergency responders are risking their lives to protect us, that they’re not inadvertently risking their job security as well. We owe so much to the men and women who put it all on the line to keep our State safe, and affording them a little fairness and consideration in times of emergency is really the least we can do.”

04 Dec: Sweeney-Ruiz Motor Vehicle Surcharge Amnesty Bill Advances

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner, Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney and Senator Teresa Ruiz which would establish a 60-day grace period for drivers with outstanding motor vehicle surcharges to pay those surcharges without facing interest or collection costs was approved by the Assembly Transportation, Public Works and Independent Authorities Committee yesterday by a vote of 10-1.

“Instead of perpetuating the status quo for drivers who have suspended licenses, New Jersey should be helping them wipe the slate clean and restore their driving privileges,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “At a time when we are actively trying to rebuild our State’s tattered economy, we need to make sure we have a mobile workforce able to travel to and from the jobs we’re trying so hard to create. This bill would give drivers a chance to make amends for past motor vehicle violations, and compete in our State’s recovering job market.”

30 Nov: Sweeney Bill To Ban Raids On Worker Assistance Funds Advances In Assembly

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney which would propose a constitutional amendment to the voters to prohibit the State from raiding any funds established through an assessment on employee’s wages to protect workers in need was approved by the Assembly Labor Committee today.

“The historic practice of raiding employee benefits funds to shore up budget shortfalls has left many of these funds unstable, and unable to meet the needs of New Jersey’s hard-hit workers in their time of greatest need,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “We cannot continue this brand of robbing-Peter-to-pay-Paul politics in the State. New Jersey’s taxpayers deserve better than the same old shell game of funneling funds away from safety net programs to put off the hard decisions we were elected to make.”

24 Nov: Sweeney Bill To Enhance New Jersey Investment Strategy Signed

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney to give the State Division of Investment more options in terms of how they invest State cash management and pensions funds was signed into law last week by Governor Corzine.

“The current national economic crisis has demanded that we be more flexible with how New Jersey invests its money,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “With enhanced authority, the State Investment Council can invest funds in New Jersey bank and credit union accounts, which will help encourage lending to State businesses, small and large. This law will allow the Investment Council to immediately begin to reshape our State’s investment portfolio to increase the return while helping to rebuild New Jersey’s economy.”

24 Nov: Sweeney Bill Establishing Financial Literacy Program Signed Into Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney which creates a three-year pilot program to provide high school students with financial literacy education was signed into law last week by Governor Corzine.

“This bill represents a significant step forward in making sure New Jersey’s students get the education they need in personal finance to make good financial decisions later in life,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “Whether it’s personal credit history, interest rate calculations or planning for retirement, too many students leave high school without an understanding of even basic financial concepts. For many, this ignorance has directly contributed to an epidemic of living and spending beyond their means, and it’s time we do something to counter the credit card culture mentality that has forced so many of our State’s youth to be saddled with crippling and massive debt.”

24 Nov: Sweeney-Sarlo Bill To Cut Employer Taxes And Discourage Raiding Of Unemployment Insurance Fund Signed Into Law

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney and Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee Vice Chairman, Senator Paul A. Sarlo, which would reduce employer taxes paid to the unemployment insurance (UI) fund when the fund’s reserves exceed a certain cap was signed into law last week by Governor Corzine.

“New Jersey’s UI fund has been tapped in good times and bad to pay for a variety of unrelated programs, and over the last few years, the tab has come due,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “It’s only through massive cash infusions by the State Legislature and a tax increase on employers this fiscal year that we’ve kept the fund solvent. This cycle of diversion and emergency infusion is bad public policy, jeopardizing the fund’s long-term fiscal integrity and costing taxpayers billions.”

“Unscrupulous people who are looking to take advantage of someone to make some easy money have, unfortunately, preyed on the most vulnerable members of our society, including people with developmental disabilities,” Sen. Sweeney (D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem) said. “This bill will make sure the rights of people with these disabilities are protected when they are named beneficiaries of an estate.”

I’m happy to support the Y in its various programs benefitting kids, families, adults and seniors in the Garden State.”

We all have an interest in more affordable government, better services, and more cost-efficiency at all levels, and I think we can benefit by incorporating the ideas and input of people from all faiths and backgrounds as we attempt to solve these problems for all the people of the Garden State.”

31 Aug: Vitale-Sweeney-Weinberg Bill To Publicize Hospital Errors Signed Into Law

PRINCETON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale, Loretta Weinberg, and Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney which will require the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) to publicly report certain preventable patient safety errors at New Jersey’s hospitals was signed into law today by Governor Corzine.

“Health care consumers have a right to know, particularly when it comes to the safety and quality of their health care experience,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, the lead sponsor on the bill and Chairman of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. “This new law requires hospitals to report some basic information which will allow health care consumers to make informed choices regarding their care, and will prohibit hospitals from being paid for errors which should have never happened. Ultimately, fair market principles will help put pressure on underperforming hospitals to do better, and will put greater focus than ever before on patient safety in health care facilities across New Jersey.”
