TRENTON – Senator Raymond J. Lesniak, D-Union, prime co-sponsor of legislation to authorize same-sex marriage during the last legislative session, today issued a statement regarding the passing of Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers student who killed himself earlier this week after being bullied by his roommate and another student for his sexual preference:
“The opponents of same sex marriage and I at least agree on one thing: it’s not just about marriage equality. It’s also about acceptance. Because some people could not accept Tyler Clementi, he took his own life. It is a tragedy that was entirely unnecessary, if we would just search our souls to better understand the emotions and feelings of our fellow human beings.”
