MEDIA ADVISORY – Leaders To Hold Press Conference To Address Surge In Private School Closures, Support Uez Jobs Scholarship Act

ELIZABETH – Senator Raymond Lesniak, prime sponsor of Senate bill 1607, the Urban Enterprise Zone Jobs Scholarship Act, will host a press conference tomorrow, Wednesday, December 10th at 10:30 A.M. to address the closure of two parochial schools in his hometown of Elizabeth. Senator Lesniak will be joined by Assemblyman Joseph Cryan, Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, Mayor Chris Bollwage of Elizabeth, and Mayor Cory Booker of Newark (invited).

Religious and minority leaders will also be on hand to pledge their support for the UEZ Jobs Scholarship Act. Dignitaries include: the Most Reverend Manuel A. Cruz, Regional Bishop of Union County, Archdiocese of Newark, Rev. Kevin M. Hanbury, Vicar for Education and Superintendent of Schools, Archdiocese of Newark, Rev. Reginald T. Jackson, Executive Director of the Black Ministers Council (invited), and President Martin Perez of the Latino Leadership Alliance (invited).

The event will take place at St. Anthony of Padua School, 227 Centre Street in Elizabeth, which recently announced its closure.

TRENTON – At a meeting of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, Senator Raymond J. Sacco Measure Calls On Feds To Allow Regulation Of Trash Transfer Stations

TRENTON – The State Senate voted today to approve SR-14, a resolution sponsored by Senator Nicholas Sacco which calls on Congress to pass the “Solid Waste Environmental Regulation Clarification Affecting Railroads Act of 2005” (S. 1607) to address the unregulated sorting and processing of waste materials at rail facilities.

“While regulation of the railroads is the purview of Congress, we can no longer sit idly by while the railroads set up environmentally dangerous trash transfer stations near our residential neighborhoods,” said Senator Sacco, D-Bergen and Hudson. “There is no reason for transfer stations located on railroad property to be held to a different standard than those located elsewhere. The potential health and environmental risk is the same.”

Leaders Address School Closures, Support UEZ Jobs Scholarship Act

ELIZABETH – Today, Senator Raymond Lesniak and Assemblyman Joseph Cryan joined religious and minority leaders to address the closure of two parochial schools in Elizabeth and to support the UEZ Jobs Scholarship Act, legislation that would provide tax credits equal to the value of scholarships donated by corporations for low-income students in Urban Enterprise Zones. The legislation aims to empower parents to choose the best educational environment for their children and to allow students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to attend schools outside of their school district.

Senator Raymond Lesniak stated, “In the past 10 years, 100 Catholic schools have closed. This week, that trend hit our community with the announcement that both St. Anthony’s and Sacred Heart schools will close. We need immediate action to ensure that students in our community continue to have the opportunity to attend a private school of their choosing.
