Rice Maintains Opposition To Same-Sex Marriage Bill

Senator Ronald L. Rice (D-Essex)

Senator was incorrectly identified as supporter in televised report

TRENTON – Sen. Ronald Rice (D-Essex) said today he remains opposed to a bill allowing same-sex marriage after being incorrectly identified as one of 200 Democrats who signed a letter in support of the legislation.

Sen. Rice said his son, Newark West Ward Councilman Ronald C. Rice, signed the letter asking Democratic legislators to pass a same-sex marriage bill. But in a televised news report on the bill, News12 New Jersey showed a photograph of Sen. Rice and indicating he was one of the signatories to the letter.

“I have been opposed to the same-sex marriage bill and I remain opposed,” Sen. Rice said. “I have talked to clergy from numerous denominations and I believe this bill should not move forward. I’ve stated this position publicly and I continue to hold it: I am opposed to same-sex marriage.”
