Senate Majority Leader Ruiz Commends Governor Murphy for Granting Clemency to Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse

Trenton – Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz issued the following statement in response to Governor Murphy’s Clemency Executive Order initiative announcement:

“I applaud Governor Murphy for his clemency executive order initiative, especially for incorporating relief for survivors of domestic violence. Granting clemency to women who were imprisoned as a result of defending themselves against domestic violence and sexual abuse is not just an act of mercy, but a recognition of the profound injustice they have endured. These women have already suffered immensely at the hands of their abusers, and their imprisonment only perpetuates their victimization,” said Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz (D-Essex/Hudson).

“Clemency offers survivors a chance to heal and rebuild their lives, with some receiving the opportunity to be reunited with their children and family,” continued Senator Ruiz. “It acknowledges the complex and dire circumstances that led to their actions and underscores our commitment to justice, compassion, and the protection of human rights. It’s time to correct these wrongs and offer these women the opportunity for a future free from violence and fear.”
