Senate Majority Leader’s Statement Regarding Release Of Red Tape Review Group Report

TRENTON – Senator Majority Leader Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex), a member of the governor’s Red Tape Review Group, today issued the following statement upon the release of the group’s findings and recommendations:

“I am supportive of the efforts of the Red Tape Review Group, having chaired an additional hearing in my legislative district to solicit input from interested members of the public. It makes good sense to use agency resources more efficiently to expedite the approval process. As I have said from the outset, an overhaul of the rule review process requires a reasonable balance between the needs of our residents, business and the environment.

“However, over the last week several pieces of legislation were drafted intending to implement some of the recommendations of the Red Tape Group. Upon scrutinizing the specific language I raised numerous concerns, particularly with respect to the potential for erosion of our citizens’ constitutional due process rights of public notice and comment.

“Those concerns and others regarding the implications of the Group’s evolving recommendations began to emerge as we approached the deadline established by the Governor’s Executive Order. As a consequence I am unable to sign off on the report released today, April 19, 2010.”
