Senator Turner Will Encourage Trenton Students to “Ride the Wave” of Reading This Summer

Darlene McKnight Elementary School Will Transform into a Beach for Senator Turner’s 9th Annual Student Book Fair

Trenton – On Friday, June 14, Senator Shirley K. Turner will bring the sand, sun, and over 10,000 books to Darlene McKnight Elementary School in Trenton for her 9th annual student book fair.

The gymnasium at the school will be transformed into a beach where over 350 students will have the opportunity to select 10 or more books from a wide variety of genres for their summer reading and home libraries.

Senator Turner’s annual book fair has become a highly-anticipated and valued tradition for the Trenton community, providing much-needed reading material to students. Since beginning the initiative, Senator Turner has been joined by many dedicated community partners to collect and distribute free books to Trenton area students.

“Nearly a decade ago, I began my book fair project in response to the closure of four out of five of Trenton’s public libraries. To this day, only one library serves the entire city, severely limiting access to reading materials,” said Senator Turner (D-Mercer/Hunterdon). “The lack of access to books in Trenton greatly impacts our children and their reading abilities. This initiative works to overcome these challenges by uniting the community to put more books into the hands of our bright young students.”

In addition to the book fair, 18 “mystery readers” will read to students between 9 and 10 A.M. This diverse group of volunteers includes police officers, healthcare professionals such as a pediatrician, an orthodontist, and a nurse practitioner, attorneys, a representative from the NAACP, a doula and community organizer, and a librarian.

“By inviting this distinguished group of volunteers to read to our students, I aim to spark inspiration and demonstrate that reading is not just fun; it is an important step on the path to realizing your biggest dreams,” added Senator Turner.

The book fair will take place on Friday, June 14 at Darlene McKnight Elementary School, 175 Girard Avenue, Trenton, NJ, and will begin at 9 AM.
