34th Legislative District

Senator Nia H. Gill is a tireless advocate for civil rights, public education, healthcare, and ensuring equal access to our democracy. Senator Gill currently sits on the Transportation, State Legislative Oversight, and Law & Public Safety Committees.

Senator Gill has stood up for democratic principles her entire career. Recognizing that the foundation of our democracy is a voting system that is free, fair, and accessible to all citizens, Senator Gill championed New Jersey’s early voting law. Early voting ensures our electoral system is accessible to all voters by allowing voting for up to two weeks before Election Day, including weekends.

In advance of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Senator Gill sponsored bills signed into law supplying protections against out-of-state laws that penalize reproductive care in New Jersey.

To ensure that the privacy of our residents is respected in a transparent and accountable manner, Senator Gill sponsored a bill restricting the use of facial recognition technology and other biometric recognition by governmental agencies. Senator Gill is also advancing legislation to mitigate the impact from the use of biased algorithms that control access to housing, employment, and credit.

Senator Gill has been dedicated to expanding healthcare her entire career and sponsored the law that expanded health insurance coverage to young adults ages 18 to 30, capturing more than 100,000 uninsured individuals in the state. President Obama included a version of this provision in the Affordable Care Act. When New Jersey had the third highest rate of HIV/AIDS infection among children in the nation and was one of only two states to ban needle exchange programs, Senator Gill authored and fought for the passage of a law that allowed these programs. The needle exchange bill helped to save lives and prevent the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New Jersey. Senator Gill is currently working to remove asset tests from Medicare eligibility determinations because nobody should have to choose between their health and having to sell their home.

Senator Gill uses her legislative power for economic and social change. As a  champion for human rights, she sponsored the law which made human trafficking a crime in New Jersey. To combat discriminatory policing practices, she authored one of the first laws to ban racial profiling.

Senator Gill has advanced some of the nation’s toughest gun laws including legislation that reduced the number of rounds in high-capacity magazines from 15 to 10 and supporting New Jersey’s red flag law.

Senator Gill is from Montclair and has been a practicing attorney for more than 30 years. She is admitted to practice in New Jersey, in federal jurisdictions, as well as the Supreme Court of the United States. Senator Gill is the recipient of numerous awards. Because of her commitment to equality, she was honored in Selma, Alabama as one of “100 Women in the 20th Century” who contributed to the struggle for civil rights.
