Sweeney Statement On Rutgers Perks For Athletics While Cutting Support For Educational Programs

TRENTON: Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today following reports in the media that Rutgers University has provided perks to those in their athletic program, such as loan forgiveness and monthly golf and car allowances, while at the same time cutting funds that assist educational programs:

“These latest revelations yet again highlight the need for strong, effective leadership at Rutgers. As Governor Christie conducts his search for a new president there, I hope he will take into account that Rutgers’ new leader will have to deal with these issues head on in a smart, cost effective manner that takes students and their families into consideration.

“At a time when we see TAG grants and other educational aid being slashed, our institutions of higher education should be doing everything they can to prevent the kinds of things we see at Rutgers. At some point, students and quality of education have to come first.”
