SWEENEY STATEMENT ON SENATE INVESTIGATIVE COMMITTEE ON GWB LANE CLOSURES

Senate President Stephen P. Sweeney (D-Salem, Cumberland, Gloucester) testifies on the Senate floor regarding S-1, legislation that would establish marriage equality in New Jersey. The bill is sponsored by the Senate President along with Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen) and Senator Raymond J. Lesniak (D-Union). The bill was approved by the full Senate with a vote of 24-16.

Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today regarding the Senate establishing a committee that will be charged specifically with looking into the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge:

“This Thursday, I plan on calling the Senate into session to establish a special committee that will specifically examine the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge.  This would be a bipartisan committee with subpoena power.  Senator Loretta Weinberg, who first challenged the Port Authority to explain the closures and who first proposed the use of subpoenas to investigate the growing scandal, will take the lead in the Senate as chair of the committee.

“There are still more questions than answers and we cannot rest until we know exactly what happened in Fort Lee.  We plan to work collaboratively with our Assembly colleagues and the committee they have created to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible.”
