19 Jul: Pocket Bikes Banned From New Jersey Streets As Codey Signs Coniglio/Turner Measure Into Law

TRENTON – Owners of miniaturized motorcycles commonly known as “pocket bikes” or “mini-motos” can no longer operate them on New Jersey’s streets and sidewalks as Governor Richard Codey signed legislation today sponsored by Senators Joseph Congilio and Shirley K. Turner that would make their use on public property illegal.

“Unfortunately, last summer saw several high-profile accidents involving children riding on pocket bikes,” said Senator Coniglio, D-Bergen. “With this new law, we hope to avoid a repeat of that this summer. It’s good to know that as children are well into enjoying their summer, concerns about accidents involving pocket bikes are greatly alleviated. It is my hope that parents will enforce this ban at home so that our local police officers don’t have to.”

09 Jun: Coniglio / Turner Measure To Ban Pocket Bikes From New Jersey Streets Passes Assembly Panel

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Joseph Coniglio and Shirley K. Turner that would ban miniaturized motorcycles commonly known as “pocket bikes” or “mini-motos” from New Jersey’s streets and sidewalks move one step closer to law today as it passed the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee.

“Even with their involvement in a number of high profile accidents, pocket bikes continue to grow in popularity,” said Senator Congilio, D-Bergen. “Many people think they are just like the Barbie or G.I. Joe Powerwheels our kids used to ask for, but they are not. These devises are fully-functional motorcycles that can reach speeds of 45 miles per hour. They are very hard to see and extremely dangerous for young ones to ride.”

“As pocket bikes have grown in popularity, we have seen an increased number of high-profile accidents involving children riding these unsafe devices on public roads,” said Senator Congilio, D-Bergen. “I look at these bikes and as a grandparent, I worry about children riding on one of these dangerous vehicles and getting hurt. These are nothing like the Barbie or G.I. Joe Powerwheels our kids used to ask for – they are fully-functional motorcycles that are very hard to see and can reach speeds of 45 miles per hour.”
