06 Dec: Buono-Cunningham Bill To Allow Prospective College Students To Compare Financial Aid Packages Advances

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Barbara Buono and Sandra Bolden Cunningham that would provide prospective college students and their parents with a better understanding of the costs and debt they will inherit in order for them to make more informed college-choice decisions was approved today by the Senate Higher Education Committee.

“The college financial aid process can be a confusing one with each college and university providing the student with different information and in a different format. Students and their parents end up comparing apples to oranges when trying to decide where to go to school,” said Senator Buono, D-Middlesex. “With a standardized form that allows financial aid to clearly and consistently be compared from school to school, students and their parents will be empowered to take control of their financial aid and make smarter decisions.”

12 Dec: Vitale Bill To Protect Gift Card Consumers Approved

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Joseph F. Vitale which would enact a number of protections for gift card consumers, including a provision requiring that gift cards could not expire within a two-year period after purchase, was approved by the Assembly today, receiving final legislative approval.

“During this time of year, the need for a bill like this is never more apparent,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “Tis the season for gift-giving, but we want to have protections in place so that, even though it’s the thought moreso than anything that counts, we don’t gyp people who receive gift cards this holiday season. This bill would ensure that the value of a gift cannot decay due to arbitrary deadlines set by the retailers.”

27 Jun: Senate Approves Measure To Help Gift Cards Retain Value

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Joseph Coniglio, Joseph Vitale and Nia Gill that would require retailers offering gift cards to disclose expiration dates and other conditions on those gift cards at time of purchase and restrict the fees that retailers can charge to gift card holders that carry a balance on the card passed the Senate Commerce Committee today.

“I think that when anyone buys or receives a gift card, they expect that it will be treated the same as cash at the store we purchase it from,” said Senator Coniglio, D-Bergen. “Unfortunately, some retailers have come to use expiration dates and hidden dormancy fees to reduce the value of these cards and increase their profit margins. Before buying a gift card, consumers deserve to know the terms and conditions of that card so they know exactly what they are buying.”

16 Jun: Vitale-Gill Bill To Protect Gift Card Consumers Advances

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Nia H. Gill which would enact a number of protections for gift card consumers, including a provision requiring that gift cards could not expire within a two-year period after purchase, was approved by the Senate Commerce Committee today.

“Many people save a gift card for a rainy day, but with little in the way of regulation, they may be surprised at the register to find that their gift card is either no longer valid, or has been severely diminished in value,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “Businesses should not be allowed to take advantage of their customers’ delay in redeeming gift cards, especially when such a delay may be no fault of the redeemer in the first place. Reasonable regulation is more than fair, and will put New Jersey at the forefront of consumer protection in regards to gift cards.”
