06 Jan: Beach Legislation Calling For Veteran Owned Business Set-Aside Clears Senate

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Jim Beach (D-Camden) that would require the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to administer a veteran-owned business set-aside program was cleared today by the full Senate.

“Our veterans have sacrificed so much for the safety and well being of this country and they deserve recognition and assistance from those that enlist their services,” said Senator Beach, Chairman of the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. “Setting aside a percentage of contracts for veteran owned businesses is just one small way we can repay the debt we owe to them. Not only is it the right thing to do, but, given the current economic climate and the need to spur the economy, it is the necessary thing to do.”

TRENTON A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden which would call upon the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) to provide special decals for drivers with Graduated Drivers Licenses (GDL) was approved today by the full Senate by a vote of 36 to 3.

According to statistics, every nine minutes, a teen driver is involved in a car accident, said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester, who serves as vice chair of the Senate Transportation Committee. Statistics also show that 40% of fatal crashes occur during the hours of 9 PM and 6 AM. 14 Feb: Scutari/Buono Bill To Eradicate Beetles Approved By Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Nicholas P. Scutari and Barbara Buono which would provide $1.3 million in federal funding to remove thousands of trees that have been infested by Asian Longhorn Beetles. The bill was approved by the full Senate today.

“The Asian Longhorn Beetles first appeared in October, and began destroying the trees of Middlesex and Union counties,” said Senator Scutari, D-Middlesex, Somerset and Union. “While the insects present no threat to public health, they pose a significant risk to New Jersey’s trees and forests. With no known predator to control them the beetles will continue to spread and kill even more hardwood trees, and, therefore, the Asian Longhorn Beetle problem needs to be handled effectively and immediately before the infestation sweeps throughout the rest of the State.”

07 Feb: Scutari’s Bill Implements $1.3 Million In Funding To Eradicate Beetles

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Nicholas P. Scutari, which would provide $1.3 million in federal funding to remove thousands of trees that have been infested by Asian Longhorn Beetles, was approved by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee today.

“The counties of Middlesex and Union have been the hardest hit areas in the State,” said Senator Scutari.

“The infestation of the Asian Longhorn Beetle is a serious matter because if not controlled, the insects could have devastating effects on the trees throughout New Jersey, and the problem could easily spread to other states,” said Senator Scutari, D-Middlesex, Somerset and Union. “Late last year the first cases of Asian Longhorn Beetle infestation were detected in Northern New Jersey and if this problem is not handled effectively and immediately, the lumber industry throughout the nation could be decimated.”
