11 Mar: Codey Bill To Combat Steroid Use Among Students Approved In Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Richard J. Codey which would expand New Jersey’s efforts to combat steroid use among students was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 38-0.

“School athletics can be a competitive and rewarding environment for students who participate,” said Senator Codey, D-Essex. “Unfortunately, some of our kids look for shortcuts in their training and follow the bad examples set by a few professional athletes by turning to steroids to enhance their game. TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Richard J. Codey which would expand New Jersey’s efforts to combat steroid use among students was unanimously approved by the Senate Education Committee today.

“While we want to encourage our student-athletes to be the best they can be, steroids are not the answer,” said Senator Codey, D-Essex. “The health risks of prolonged steroid abuse are well-documented, but whether it’s peer pressure or the bad example set by some professional athletes, too many students still take the risk. Keeping kids away from steroids should be one of the State’s top athletic safety priorities, and this bill would go a long way towards that end.”

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Ellen Karcher which would enroll New Jersey in a multi-state agreement to streamline the licensing process for horse racing participants was approved by the Senate Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee today.

“Horse racing is a valuable industry in the Garden State, with facilities like Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands bringing in thousands of patrons each year,” said Senator Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer. “One of the most important factors in ensuring a horse racing system free from scam artists is a thorough and efficient licensing process, and the more information and resources available to a licensing panel, the better.
