14 Jun: Karcher/Weinberg Measure To Create ‘Victims Of Crime Compensation Agency’ Clears Committee

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Ellen Karcher and Loretta Weinberg which would create the Victims of Crime Compensation Agency (VCCA) within the Department of the Treasury was unanimously approved today by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee.

“Historically, the Victims of Crime Compensation Board has been a political patronage spot, but this bill would serve as a step in the right direction toward returning the Board to its original mission – helping the victims of violent crime,” said Senator Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer.

14 Jun: Buono-Karcher Resolution Supporting Federal Efforts To Give State Say In Trash Transfer Stations Passes Senate Committee

TRENTON – The Senate Transportation Committee today approved SR-99, sponsored by Senators Barbara Buono and Ellen Karcher that calls upon Congress to pass the “Clean Railroads Act of 2007” which gives state and local authorities a say in regulating trash transfer stations located on railroad property.

“Railroad corporations have been able to get around state and local health and environmental regulations by exploiting a loophole in federal law,” said Senator Buono. “Congress needs to move to end this loophole so that our communities are not subjected to these health and safety hazards.”

14 Jun: Assembly Committee Approves Buono Bill To Curb Cyberbullies

TRENTON – The Assembly Education Committee today acted to curb taunts and threats sent by e-mail, text messaging or instant messaging by approving legislation sponsored by Senator Barbara Buono that would expand New Jersey’s school bullying laws to include new technologies.

“For bullies looking for new ways to torment their victims, cell phones and the Internet provide them with new, anonymous avenues by which to spread their taunts and threats,” said Senator Buono, D-Middlesex. “There are legitimate fears among who work with children that cyberbullying could be even more damaging to victims than traditional schoolyard bullying.”

14 Jun: Assembly Committee Passes Doria-Turner Bill To Reform State’s School Construction Program

TRENTON – The Assembly Education Committee today approved A-4336, the companion bill to legislation sponsored by Senators Joseph V. Doria and Shirley K. Turner that would eliminate the embattled Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) and replace it with an independent authority within the Department of the Treasury to handle school construction finances.

“There are insurmountable problems with the SCC and we simply need to start over,” said Senator Doria, D-Hudson and Vice Chair of the Senate Education Committee. “School construction projects need to move forward and use lessons we’ve learned will help the New Jersey Schools Development Authority avoid the same mistakes made in the past.”

11 Jun: Karcher Statement On Assembly Approval Of Dual Office-Holding Ban

TRENTON – Senator Ellen Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer, a leading advocate in the State Legislature for greater ethics controls and government transparency, issued the following statement today regarding the Assembly’s approval, by a vote of 69-3, with 8 abstentions, for a ban on dual office-holding in the State of New Jersey:

“Today, New Jersey’s Legislature took a needed first step to ban public officials from holding more than one elected office at the same time. I will be introducing the Senate version of the bill this Thursday. While the bill advancing is not a perfect ban, it begins a dialogue that needs to take place, and will go a long way to ensuring a more ethical model in the future.

11 Jun: Doria-Turner Bill Would Reform State’s School Construction Program

11 Jun: Codey Praises Assembly For Unanimously Approving Ethics Reform Bills

TRENTON – Senate President Richard J. Codey (D-Essex) today applauded the Assembly for unanimously approving two bills that are part of a comprehensive package of ethics reforms that he has sponsored aimed at restoring the public’s confidence in government and creating greater transparency. The bipartisan measures – S2505, S2506 – now head to the Governor for his signature.

Codey. “It signals that we are serious about restoring faith in government by cracking down on abuses and creating a more open and transparent process. 11 Jun: Karcher Ethics Bills Receive Final Legislative Approval In Assembly

TRENTON – A package of bills sponsored by Senator Ellen Karcher which would protect public resources from corruption by prohibiting public entities from making campaign contributions, increasing penalties for misuse of public resources and providing a mechanism to reclaim lost funds due to corruption were unanimously approved by the Assembly today, and now go to the Governor to be signed into law.

“New Jersey’s honest, hard-working taxpayers deserve a government that’s free of ethical lapses and wasted public funds,” said Senator Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer, a leading watchdog for ethics reform in the State Legislature. “They deserve elected representatives who serve as honest, ethical stewards of the public trust. These bills would go a long way to restoring integrity in the system, by penalizing corrupt politicians, prohibiting unethical behavior and calling for a higher standard from government.”

11 Jun: Adler – Auditor’s Findings In Willingboro Merits Criminal Probe

TRENTON – Senator John H. Adler today asked State Attorney General Stuart Rabner to launch a criminal probe to punish those responsible for misappropriating millions of taxpayer dollars in the Willingboro Township School District.

“As we tell our children, there have to be consequences for wrongdoing,” said Senator Adler, D-Cherry Hill. “Taxpayers need to know we will dig down to the root causes of wrongdoing and punish those responsible.”

11 Jun: Girgenti To Crack Down On Those Who Use Fake Utility Id Badges

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator John A. Girgenti to upgrade the penalties for misusing public utility employee identification badges and establish penalties for making, selling and possessing public utility IDs was approved by the Senate Law, Public Safety and Veterans’ Affairs Committee today.

“I am concerned about the number of instances in which New Jersey residents have been victimized by people posing as utility employees,” said Senator Girgenti, D-Bergen and Passaic and Chairman of the Senate panel. “There are steps consumers can take to protect themselves against home invaders posing as utility workers. It’s important that New Jerseyans be cautious about giving anyone access to their homes. Residents should not hesitate to call the utility to confirm if they have dispatched workers to their houses or neighborhoods.”
