25 Nov: Codey Appoints Sarlo To Chair Judiciary Committee

TRENTON – Senate President Richard J. Codey (D-Essex) today announced the appointment of Senator Paul A. Sarlo (D-Bergen, Passaic, Essex) as the new Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee to fill the vacancy that will be left when Senator John H.Adler (D-Cherry Hill) leaves to join Congress.

“I’d like to thank John Adler for his fine stewardship of the Senate Judiciary Committee,” said Sen. Codey. “He has served the committee proudly for many years and we wish him all the best as he heads off to represent New Jersey’s interests in Congress.”

24 Nov: Buono/Van Drew/Turner Bill To Establish �invest In New Jersey Business Grant Program Act � Gets Final Legislative Approval

TRENTON � A measure sponsored by Senators Barbara Buono, Jeff Van Drew and Shirley K. Turner, which would establish the �Invest in New Jersey Business Grant Program Act,� as an incentive program to encourage businesses to make capital investments and hire and retain new workers received final legislative approval today from the full Senate by a vote of 33 to 7.

�With the economic stability of the nation struggling, now is the time for us to invest in home-grown, New Jersey businesses,� said Senator Buono, D-Middlesex. �By providing these incentives for the State�s businesses, we�re promoting growth and creating a welcoming environment for businesses to thrive now, and well into the future.�

24 Nov: �grace�s Law� Clears Full Senate

TRENTON � A measure sponsored by Senators Barbara Buono and Fred H. Madden, which would require health care providers to cover the cost of hearing aids for children age 15 and younger was unanimously approved today by the full Senate.

�When left undiagnosed and untreated in children, hearing loss can impede the development of speech, language and cognitive development,� said Senator Buono, D-Middlesex. �These developmental delays can cause a need for costly special education services later on in life. By calling upon health insurers to cover the cost of hearing aids for kids, we are renewing our commitment to the growth and educational success of New Jersey�s children.�

24 Nov: Turner Bill To Allow All Towns To Fight “Animal House” Behavior

TRENTON – The Senate today voted 34-0 to approve a bill sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner to allow all towns to pass “Animal House” laws to force landlords of structures with four or fewer units to post bonds of up to $25,000 to cover expenses related to bad behavior by tenants.

“Bad behavior like loud, late-night, parties by college students living off-campus can destroy a neighborhood,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “This proposal extends the existing ‘Animal House’ law now limited to shore communities to a statewide basis.”

24 Nov: Ruiz-Vitale Measure To Help Hard-Hit New Jerseyans During Recession Receives Final Legislative Approval

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Teresa Ruiz and Joseph F. Vitale which would provide financial assistance to individuals and families as part of the “New Jersey Economic Assistance and Recovery Plan” was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 35-0, receiving final legislative approval.

“As the national economic meltdown continues to drive down stock prices and increase the volatility in the banking and loan industries, it can be very easy to lose sight of the human impact of the crisis,” said Senator Ruiz, D-Essex and Union, and a member of the Budget Committee. “However, the bad state of the economy has very real consequences for families struggling to make ends meet. These are people who are at the lowest ends of the economic spectrum and may face foreclosure, extreme poverty and homelessness as the cost of living climbs higher and higher – and they need our help.”

24 Nov: Smith Measure To Protect State Forests Approved By Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate Environment Committee Chair, Senator Bob Smith, which would establish a new forest stewardship program in the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to protect privately-owned forests in the Garden State was approved today by the Senate, receiving a vote of 35-3.

“New Jersey has taken a bold step in pledging to drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020,” said Senator Smith, D-Middlesex and Somerset. “However, if we’re going to meet our greenhouse gas reduction goals in the next two decades, we need to protect our biggest weapon in the carbon-sequestering arsenal – our State’s lush forest land. Through this legislation, we’re extending support and incentives to good-faith forest stewards and ensuring that forestland will be preserved from overdevelopment and suburban sprawl.”

24 Nov: Sarlo-Turner ‘Main Street Business Assistance Program’ Bill Approved

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Paul A. Sarlo and Shirley K. Turner which would establish the “Main Street Business Assistance Program” to support local small and mid-sized businesses in the State was approved by the full Senate today by a vote of 37-3, receiving final legislative approval.

“New Jersey’s economic strength depends heavily on the many small and mid-sized businesses which dot our local landscapes and set up shop in storefronts along our major thoroughfares,” said Senator Sarlo, D-Bergen, Essex and Passaic, and Vice Chairman of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. “These are businesses built from the ground up, by New Jerseyans and for New Jerseyans, providing access to jobs and investing in our communities. As we work to address the fall-out from the biggest economic meltdown since the Great Depression, we need to continue to support small and mid-sized business growth, and protect these businesses from the worst of the national crisis.”

24 Nov: Codey Bill To Spur Business Retention, Job Growth Approved By Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate President Richard J. Codey (D-Essex) that would serve as an economic engine by creating a more business-friendly environment in New Jersey and spurring job growth was approved by the full Senate today by a vote of 39 to 0. Senate Bill S3/S1874, which was substituted by identical Assembly bill A2722, is one of many bills being voted on today that are part of the Governor’s economic stimulus plan aimed at responding to the current state and national economic crisis.

The first component of the bill would eliminate the so-called sales “throw out rule” provision, which is part of the formula used to calculate the corporation business tax. The second component of the bill would eliminate the “regular place of business” requirement used to allocate less than 100% of income to New Jersey. Together, these components would create a more competitive environment for New Jersey to attract and retain businesses.

24 Nov: Van Drew Resolution Urging Congress To Act On Homeless Vets Approved

TRENTON – A resolution sponsored by Senator Jeff Van Drew which would urge Congress to enact legislation to set aside housing choice vouchers for homeless veterans was unanimously approved by the Senate today, receiving final legislative approval.

“It is shameful that the brave men and women who have risked their lives in the name of freedom and have fallen on hard economic times cannot find the housing help they need,” said Senator Van Drew, D-Cape May and Cumberland. “Congress must act immediately to correct this egregious wrong and ensure that homeless veterans around the country get the support and assistance they need to get back on their feet. This is about doing right by those who’ve sacrificed so much to keep America safe.”
