02 May: Paid Family Leave Legislation Is Now Law

TRENTON – Landmark legislation sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney and Senator Barbara Buono, which will make New Jersey the second state in the nation (after California) to provide paid family leave benefits for workers caring for sick family members or newborn or newly adopted children was signed into law today, at a ceremony at the State House.

“The signing of this bill ushers in a new day for New Jersey’s workforce, in that it gives hard-working parents and caregivers the time they need to take care of the family members who rely on them the most,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “By now, you all know of my strong conviction for this legislation, because I was in a similar situation when my 14 year-old daughter, Lauren was born. My employer was understanding, and allowed me to take the time I needed. Had my employment situation been different, I could have had a difficult time balancing spending the 75 days at the hospital with my newborn daughter, or going to work to provide for my wife and young son. This new law is aimed at helping workers whose employers won’t allow them to take this necessary leave time.”

21 Apr: Sweeney, Oroho: Have Every Community That Benefits Contribute To State Police Budget

Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney (D-3) and Senator Steven Oroho (R-24), members of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, made this statement after hearing testimony before the committee about the governor’s proposal to charge residents of 89 municipalities extra fees for the cost of State Police protection:

“State Police officers aren’t just watching the streets of small towns. They patrol highways and help law enforcement in towns big and small with efforts to combat gangs, solve major crimes and keep streets safe,” Sweeney said. “If the governor wants municipalities to bolster the State Police budget, he should have all 566 communities contribute, not just take from small towns.”

16 Apr: Sweeney – Roberts’ Property Tax Credit Plan Deserves Full Public Debate

TRENTON – Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement regarding Senate Republican attacks on Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts’ plan to move from a property tax rebate check to a credit on the State income tax:

“As long as I’ve known Joe Roberts, I’ve known him to be a dedicated public servant willing to stand up and fight for the needs of his constituents. Even though Republican lawmakers may be loath to admit it, the man has credibility when it comes to seeking to control the soaring costs of government in New Jersey. He has been in the trenches, with measures like the CORE plan, local property tax caps and a 20 percent reduction on the property tax bills of hard-hit taxpayers.

07 Apr: Paid Family Leave Bill Gets Final Legislative Approval From Senate

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney and Senator Barbara Buono which would provide paid family leave benefits for workers caring for sick family members and newborn or newly adopted children received final legislative approval today from the full Senate by a vote of 21 to 15.

“I know this type of leave time is necessary, because I’ve been there myself,” said Majority Leader Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem, in reference to the birth of his 14 year-old daughter, Lauren, who remained in intensive care for 75 days after she was born. “In my case, I had an understanding employer, but I can’t say the same for all of New Jersey’s workers. This bill would signify a new day for the State’s workforce, in that, the needs of families will be put before the needs of business owners. Parenting is the most important job that many of us will ever undertake, and this legislation would allow New Jersey to remain in the forefront of providing necessary benefits to its hard-working residents.”

04 Apr: Senate To Consider Paid Family Leave On Monday

TRENTON – The full Senate will convene on Monday, April 7 at 12:30 PM, to vote on final legislative approval of S-786, legislation sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem, and Senator Barbara Buono, D-Middlesex, which would provide paid family leave benefits for workers caring for sick family members and newborn or newly adopted children.

Monday’s vote will mark the second time the Senate considers this legislation. In March, the Senate approved the measure by a vote of 22 to 16. The Assembly amended the bill at the request of the State Attorney General, to protect small business owners. The Assembly amendments also increase penalties for Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) and paid family leave fraud.

02 Apr: Sweeney: UI Funding Crisis Shows Need For His Raid Block Plan

TRENTON – Senate Majority Leader Stephen M. Sweeney today said the depleted condition of the Unemployment Insurance Fund demonstrates the need for his bipartisan proposal, SCR-60, to seek voter approval to permanently ban raids on employer and worker generated State funds which have been skimmed over the years during budget crises.

“I support Governor Corzine’s proposal to replenish the UI Fund now and avoid a tax increase, but I think people would welcome a long-term ban on future raids that is backed up by the State Constitution,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland.

25 Mar: Sweeney: Tough Budget Cuts Must Be Made, Consolidation Of Services Will Help

DEPTFORD – Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem, today released the following statement regarding Governor Corzine’s proposed FY 2009 budget after a Budget and Appropriations Committee hearing held at Gloucester County Institute of Technology.

“This budget season is going to be difficult – I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t. My goal as we make these tough, but necessary, budget cuts is to ensure that the decisions are as fair as possible. However, we need residents to know that we are working to make cuts that will still allow them to receive as much aid as possible. Residents don’t want their services cut, and we don’t want to cut them, but it’s something we’ll have to do to make ends meet.

17 Mar: Sweeney Bill Advances To Support Special Ed High School Students

TRENTON – The Senate today approved a bill, S-442, co-sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Stephen M. Sweeney, to authorize special education students who have attended four years of high school to participate in their class graduation ceremonies.

“Special ed students get federally mandated, individual education plans which often extend beyond the standard four-year high school period,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland. “This bill ensures special education students their right to experience the full high school experience while they continue their academic pursuits.”

12 Mar: Legal Workers, Welcome To NJ

Just about the first thing I mentioned when I spoke about my bill to impose penalties on companies that knowingly hire illegal workers is that New Jersey should welcome legal immigrants with open arms.

The way I see it, New Jersey is the best state in the greatest country in the world and it’s where I want to live out my American Dream. I’m proud to work here and to live here with my family.
