DELRAN – A measure sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg which calls upon the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) to evaluate available resources necessary to provide home health care services to veterans was signed into law today by Governor Jon Corzine. The bill signing was held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3020 in Delran, Burlington County.
“Our men and women in uniform put their lives on the line to protect the rest of us here at home,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. ” Because war is such a traumatic experience, it can leave returning veterans with visible physical and invisible emotional scars – which may have a better chance of healing if the veteran is treated at home in a familiar environment.”
Senator Weinberg’s measure, S-2305, calls upon the Adjutant General of the DMVA to examine available resources and issue a report to the Legislature containing information on the amount of State funds necessary to meet the demand of veterans’ home health care services. The study would also include plans for working with Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies to cover the cost of at-home care.
“The reality is, many long-term care patients prefer to receive treatment at home. This legislation will examine the costs associated and hopefully allow for the allocation of funding to enable the men and women who risk their lives to save ours to receive care wherever they are most comfortable,” Senator Weinberg said.
This legislation received unanimous final legislative approval on June 21. The Adjutant General’s report is due to the Legislature in February of 2008.
