Adler Says Chertoff Pick Will Make Families Safer

TRENTON – Senator John H. Adler, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today praised the move by President Bush to advance Michael Chertoff as the country’s next Homeland Security Director.

“My family and all of America’s families will be safer with Michael Chertoff as Homeland Security Director,” said Senator Adler, D-Cherry Hill. “I applaud him (Chertoff) for assuming this incredible responsibility.”

Chertoff, a federal judge with the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, is a former U.S. Attorney for New Jersey and served as a special counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee in its 2001 probe of racial profiling and the New Jersey State Police.

Senator Adler acknowledged that he and Chertoff were close personal friends. In fact, Judge Chertoff’s wife, Meryl, attended Harvard Law School with the Senator and his wife, Shelley.
