Buono Applauds U.s. Senators, Amtrak On New Plans For Hudson River Tunnel

TRENTON – Senate Majority Leader Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) today praised the work of Senators Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez after the joint announcement with Amtrak for a proposed new tunnel under the Hudson River that would expand commuter rail capacity to New York City.

Buono released the following statement:

“For residents who thought the death of the ARC tunnel and NJ Transit cutbacks had doomed them to slower commutes and less service at a higher cost, this announcement literally stands as a light at the end of the tunnel.

“In the long run, this proposal is ultimately about jobs and the future of New Jersey. Our economic well-being is tied closely to our proximity to New York City and the international markets. The sooner we can get people to work on this project, the sooner we can make it easier for thousands more to get to work every day.

“I applaud Senators Lautenberg and Menendez for not accepting the governor’s decision to kill the ARC tunnel as the last word on expanding our mass transit network.”
