Buono: Reforms Critical To The Success Of Property Tax Reform

TRENTON – Senator Barbara Buono, D-Middlesex, made the following remarks after the Governor’s State of the State Address:

“Today the Governor provided us with focus as we strive to complete the work started by the property tax joint committees.

“I was glad to hear the Governor speak about the need for a new school funding formula that will go into effect in time for the 2007-2008 school year. A new funding formula is perhaps the most important piece of a complete reform package and will have a direct impact on property tax bills.

“As a sponsor of the bill that would create the Office of the Comptroller, I also echo the Governor’s call to create a Comptroller that is independent, apolitical and empowered to hold all levels of government fiscally accountable. It’s a critical part of the effort to get spending under control so that our efforts will be sustainable and not just short-term band-aids.”
