“At a time when New Jersey residents are overburdened with excessively high energy costs, this legislation would work to provide the State’s neediest residents with an annual boost to their Lifeline benefits that is in keeping with inflation,” said Senator Cunningham, D-Hudson, who serves as Vice-Chair of the Senate Economic Growth panel.

14 Feb: Vitale-Buono Bill To Ban Sale Of Flavored Cigarettes Advances In Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Barbara Buono which would prohibit the sale of certain flavored cigarettes in the State of New Jersey was approved by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee today by a vote of 8-1.

“Smoking is a life-threatening habit, and anything we can do to discourage kids from picking up the habit is a step in the right direction,” said Senator Vitale. “The problem is that the entire time we’re discouraging young people from smoking, tobacco companies are coming up with new and inventive ways to draw in new customers. It would be hypocritical for the State to invest time, energy and money into smoking cessation programs while at the same time allowing tobacco companies to get away with flavored cigarettes and other marketing gimmicks specifically designed to get children to start smoking.”

14 Feb: Weinberg Bill To Require Religious Parity In Educational Exams Clears Senate Education Panel

TRENTON – A measure sponsored Senator Loretta Weinberg which would require colleges and universities to provide alternate testing arrangements for students who are unable to attend scheduled exams because of religious observances was unanimously approved today by the Senate Education Committee.

“This bill is about parity,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “It is absolutely unfair and discriminatory for students to have to miss out on such important exams – exams that are necessary to attend these institutions of higher learning because of their religion. By providing alternate exam dates, these students would be provided with the same opportunities as students of other religions to take the exams and go on to the college, university, law or medical school of their choosing.”

14 Feb: Rice Bill To Prohibit Sex Offenders From Working With Children And The Disabled Clears Senate Health Panel

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Ronald L. Rice, which would ban people who have been convicted of an offense against a child from working with children and the disabled was unanimously approved today by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.

“When it comes to our children and the disabled population, we must ensure that those who work with them have their safety and well-being in mind,” said Senator Rice, D-Essex, who is a member of the Senate Health panel. “People with a history of violence – sexual or otherwise, have no business working with these groups, who are probably least able to protect themselves. With this legislation, we would be working to help protect this very special and fragile segment of the population.”

14 Feb: Girgenti/Turner Bill To Educate Elementary School Students About Personal Finance Clears Senate Education Panel

TRENTON – A measure sponsored Senators John A. Girgenti and Shirley K. Turner which would establish a pilot program to provide a course in financial literacy to elementary school students was unanimously approved today by the Senate Education Committee.

“It’s a pretty well known fact that many credit card companies target young students with an influx of credit card applications as soon as they turn 18,” said Senator Girgenti, D-Passaic and Bergen. “This legislation would help teach students from an early age, the importance of saving and managing their money, while showing them the benefits of developing long-term savings goals.”

“With the economy bracing for some serious changes, it is imperative that we educate our students about how to manage their finances, and not incur unnecessary debt,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer, who Chairs the Senate Education panel. “Too often, our young people are very concerned with keeping up with the ever-changing and increasingly expensive trends, while not paying enough attention to the effect it can have on their parents’ bank accounts. Our young people must be taught how to manage their money, so that they can go on to make responsible financial choices. If it helps to make them more appreciative of the sacrifices their parents make for them, that’s a definite plus.”
