12 May: Preview: Senate Committees To Tackle License Suspension, Environmental Concerns On Monday

TRENTON – On Monday, the Senate Transportation Committee will hold a hearing on the findings of the Motor Vehicle Affordability and Fairness Task Force, a panel of experts charged by the Legislature with reviewing the State’s driver’s license suspension laws to study the impact on New Jersey drivers.

Senator Nicholas J. Sacco, the Chair of the Transportation Committee and a prime sponsor of the bill establishing the Task Force as part of the larger Motor Vehicle Commission reform legislation signed into law in January of 2003, noted that the report issued by the Task Force will likely be a stepping off point for future legislation.

08 May: Doria/Weinberg Resolution Would Create ‘Genocide Awareness Week’

TRENTON – A resolution sponsored by Senators Joseph V. Doria, Jr. and Loretta Weinberg that would designate May 19-25, 2006 as “Genocide Awareness Week” in New Jersey was unanimously approved today by the Senate State Government Committee.

“Too often in our world, acts of unspeakable violence are perpetrated against a people in the name of genocide or ethnic cleansing,” said Senator Doria, D-Hudson. ” The same basic pattern follows, whether you’re talking about Nazi Germany or the Darfur region of the Sudan. Genocide destabilizes the bonds that hold us together in the brotherhood of humanity, and the free world has an obligation to oppose any attempts to eradicate an ethnic group for political, racial or religious reasons.”

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Loretta Weinberg and Paul A. Sarlo, to require child care facilities to remove from their centers all unsafe or recalled items, was unanimously approved by the full Senate today.

“Parents and child care workers assume that the toys their children are playing with must be safe, because they are sold on store shelves,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “Consumers rely on the manufacturers to make sure that they make their products safe, but each year many products are recalled. We must be sure that our children are protected from these dangerous toys by requiring any unsafe products to be removed from our day care centers.”

TRENTON – Senator Loretta Weinberg and Assemblyman Jim Whelan today unveiled a landmark proposal to give elderly and disabled residents the choice of receiving government aid for long-term health care in the comfort of their homes and local communities.

“For too many generations, ironclad government systems channeled the elderly and the disabled into nursing homes and other institutions,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “But today, we’re unveiling a proposal that will change the system and direct state and federal funding to home health care and community-based programs.”

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg designed to regulate store “rainchecks,” to help protect consumers was unanimously approved today by the full Senate.

“Consumers deserve to be treated fairly when spending their money,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “By requiring stores to make patrons aware of raincheck policies, they would be able to make more informed decisions about their purchases, while holding stores responsible for honoring the vouchers they issue.”
