GILL STATEMENT ON FIRST MEETING OF SENATE HEALTH EXCHANGE TASK FORCE

Senator Nia Gill at the first meeting of the Senate Task Force on Health Insurance Exchange Implementation

TRENTON – Senator Nia H. Gill issued the following statement today on the first meeting of the Senate Task Force on Health Insurance Exchange Implementation. Senator Gill was selected today by her colleagues on the committee to serve as chair of the panel, which was created to oversee and develop recommendations related to the operation of the federal health exchange in New Jersey:

“I want to thank my fellow senators for committing to serve on the task force as we undertake very important work in the weeks and months ahead.

“This task force will provide the Legislature with a vehicle at the state level for obtaining information about what is happening with respect to the market, the activities of providers and New Jersey residents seeking health coverage. This is important to making sure the exchange is benefiting our residents to the maximum extent possible. It will also ensure we are appropriately informed and prepared to take legislative action regarding our marketplace.

“We know there would have been significant benefits to having a state health exchange. The court challenge to tax subsidies for consumers obtaining insurance on a federal marketplace, which will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court, is very concerning since the case could potentially have a dramatically negative impact on New Jersey. It further demonstrates the need for the task force to work with all stakeholders as we move forward in this process.”
