Girgenti: Legislature Will Step Up To Help All School Districts In Need

Senator John A. Girgenti, D-Passaic, speaks on the Senate floor in honor of retiring Senator Bob Martin, D-Morris.

TRENTON — Senator John Girgenti (D-Passaic) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling that the governor’s school aid cuts were unconstitutional:

“The Court’s ruling proves that the needs of New Jersey’s most at-risk students cannot become part of a simply political equation.

“While the Court will ensure Paterson is treated fairly and equitably under the law, there are other districts throughout Passaic County where at-risk youths live, and which are just as deserving of increased aid.

“The purpose of the funding formula was to move beyond the splintered politics of Abbott and towards a day where all schools and school children are treated fairly. By blindly and arbitrarily cutting aid last year, the governor restarted an argument that should have been dead and buried.

“Yes, the Legislature will ensure that the Court’s decision is enforced, but it will also ensure that other school districts who have been unduly harmed by the governor’s short-sighted education policy are given the help they need, as well.”
