‘If not, I will support Senate President Sweeney’s plan to pursue the implementation of reforms through legislation.’
TRENTON — Senator Raymond Lesniak (D-Union) issued the following statement today supporting Senate President Steve Sweeney’s call for Rutgers University to implement the recommendations of the school’s Joint Task Force on Governance headed by the former chairman of the university’s Board of Governors Rev. M. William Howard Jr.
“In the wake of the merger with the University of Medicine and Dentistry and changes to its relationships with its satellite campuses, Rutgers wisely formed a joint task force to evaluate how it could better govern the university after the expansion. After a thorough and collaborative review, the task force made a number of recommended reforms, including reducing the size of the Board of Trustees, altering the committee structure and working more collaboratively with legislative leaders.
“These common-sense recommendations will help clarify the roles of the governing bodies, streamline decision making and make the university better equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.
“I urge the school to adopt them. If not, I will support Senate President Sweeney’s plan to pursue the implementation of reforms through legislation.”
