Senate To Honor Record-Breaking Achievements Of New Jersey Devils’ Martin Brodeur

Senate President Codey & Senate Republican Leader Kean to Present Resolution to the NHL’s All-Time Wins Leader as Hundreds of Fans Descend on State House

TRENTON – The New Jersey Devils’ record-breaking goaltender Martin Brodeur will be honored with a resolution by the New Jersey State Senate in a special ceremony at the State House on Thursday, June 18, at 2 pm. Prior to the Senate session, the sponsors of the resolution, Senate President Richard J. Codey and Senate Republican Leader Thomas H. Kean, Jr., will join Brodeur and top Devils officials for a press availability at 1:30 pm in room 103 of the State House, across from the Senate Chambers.

The joint resolution, which is sponsored by both the Senate and the General Assembly, will proclaim Thursday as “Martin Brodeur Day” in New Jersey. The occasion will be marked by a special train ride to Trenton, which will depart from Newark in the morning with several hundred Devils fans onboard.

“On behalf of the entire Senate, we’re proud to honor Marty Brodeur as our ‘adopted son,’” said Sen. Codey (D-Essex), who represents Brodeur’s hometown. “He has kept Devils fans entertained for nearly 20 years and given our state something to be proud of. He’s a first-rate athlete who can now claim the distinction of being in a league of his own.”

“Marty Brodeur may have been born in Canada, but he’s spent 15 years making sure New Jersey has a world class hockey team,” Senator Kean said (R-Essex, Morris, Somerset and Union). “It’s more than fitting that we honor him today for his contributions to New Jersey Devils fans. Few major sports figures show as much loyalty to their teams and their fans as Marty Brodeur.”

Brodeur, a Montreal native who now resides in Essex County, is being honored for his outstanding feats on the ice, which included his record breaking 552nd win on March 17, making him the NHL’s all-time wins leader for a goalie. Over the course of his NHL career, he has led the Devils to three Stanley Cup championships and also amassed records for the most wins in a season, lowest post-season goals against average and most combined regular season and post-season shutouts.

Also attending the press availability will be Devils Chairman and Managing Partner Jeff Vanderbeek; Devils Co-Owner Mike Gilfillan; Devils alumni Ken Daneyko, Rob Skrlac, and Grant Marshall; and Matt Loughlin and Sherry Ross from the Devils Broadcasting team.
