Sweeney / Burzichelli / Fisher Bill To Expand Opportunities For Farmers

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Stephen M. Sweeney and Assemblymen John J. Burzichelli and Douglas H. Fisher, which will provide flexibility for farmers to use their farm vehicles to transport “farm supplies” from any area farm, became law today.

“The farmers in New Jersey have been experiencing economic hardships after a season with poor crops,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem. “Mother Nature is not always kind to our area farms and the unpredictable weather makes it difficult to keep their farms operating.”

SWEENEY/ BURZICHELLI/ FISHER BILL TO EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES FOR FARMERS

Senator Sweeney noted that, “Now farmers will be able to supplement their income by maximizing the use of their vehicles year round and ease the financial woes that many face each season.”

The enacted bill, S-592, would allow flexibility on how farmers use their farm vehicles. Senator Sweeney stated that the law will also allow farmers to carry any farm products or supplies in their vehicle. This law will allow greater use of the farm vehicles year round.

“By expanding the potential use of registered farm vehicles, we are providing farmers with additional income opportunities,” said Assemblyman Fisher, D-Cumberland. “New Jersey’s farm vehicles can and should be put to more practical use beyond transporting goods produced, grown or raised on a single farm.”

“Farmers spend thousands of dollars on farm equipment and they need a healthy return on that investment,” said Assemblyman Burzichelli, D-Gloucester.

“This law will be a win-win situation for New Jersey because business owners and residents can receive services for jobs they need done while farmers can ease their financial stress when crops are not at their best,” said Senator Sweeney. “In the past, farmers could only carry or transport their own products, but now we can give them the freedom they need and allow them to help area farmers with their work. “
