TRENTON – Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today regarding Governor Christie’s recent comments about our state’s education professionals:
“Governor Christie’s recent comments regarding teachers are horribly misleading and his name calling tactics are wearing thin. He continues to fail to acknowledge that his billion dollar educational cuts are what caused teacher layoffs. His statements connecting layoffs to pay freezes are just plain wrong. Most importantly, he is creating an atmosphere where those who educate our children are being labeled as the enemy.
“I believe that reforms are needed to the state’s educational system, not just pension and health benefits. But vilifying our teachers is not the way to do it. Unfortunately, the governor doesn’t seem to get that. He continues to push blame on others and distract the public from his administration’s record on education.”
