SWEENEY ON CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION VOTE: WE WILL FIGHT THIS ATTACK ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL POWER OF THE LEGISLATURE

Senate President Steve Sweeney

Senate President Steve Sweeney today released the following statement in response to the New Jersey Civil Service Commission decision to ignore legislative action that blocked their ability to strip public workers of civil service protections through a jobs banding scheme:

“The Civil Service Commission’s actions today are deplorable. We cannot allow them to singlehandedly strip New Jersey’s workers of the civil service rights and protections which provide a fair process for hiring, firing and promotions  that help safeguard against corruption, favoritism  and cronyism. The Legislature, in a landmark move, voted to stop these rule changes from being implemented, yet the commission seems to believe they can ignore the Legislature.

“We are currently evaluating all of our options, including filing an injunction if necessary. But first, I encourage the Office of Administrative Law to not accept the rule change, keeping this unlawful banding proposal from being published in the New Jersey Register and therefore blocking it from going into effect. We must stop these attacks on our public workers and the constitutional powers of the Legislature.”
