Sweeney, Ruiz Support Decision to Keep Schools Closed for Remainder of the Year

Trenton – Senate President Steve Sweeney and Senate Education Chair Senator M. Teresa Ruiz issued the following statement in support of Governor Murphy’s decision to keep the schools closed for the remainder of the school year:

“We agree with Governor Murphy’s decision to keep the school’s closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  We recognize this is difficult on many levels, especially for our parents, educators and students, but it was the right thing to do. The Senate Education Recovery Task Force has already begun working on recommendations to address both short and long term issues brought to light by COVID-19. Keeping the schools closed will protect public health and in the meantime we will continue looking for ways to improve remote instruction, bridge the digital divide and mitigate learning loss.”
