SWEENEY STATEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Senate President Sweeney addresses the audience at the Women's Lobby Day Rally

TRENTON – Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today, which is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women:

“We simply cannot ignore this indisputable fact: violence against women anywhere is never, ever acceptable. All too often, people look the other way or question whether they should get involved when they see or are made aware of violence against women occurring. Silence is not an option.

“According to the United Nations, nearly 70% of all women will experience violence in their lifetime. The goal of today is to drive awareness of the issue and to bring that number down to zero as quickly as possible. Please get involved by going to http://www.un.org/en/women/endviolence/. Together, we can create a world where this kind of day and campaign is no longer necessary.”
