Sweeney Statement On Paulsboro Train Derailment

Senate President Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem, and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, D-Essex and Passaic, speak with reporters after Governor Christie's address to the joint legislative session on mid-year budget solutions.

TRENTON – Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement regarding the derailment of a train carrying vinyl chloride in Paulsboro earlier today:

“As emergency crews respond and get an understanding of any threats to the health and safety of local residents, all officials should take every step to protect everyone from any danger from the chemicals.

“I want to assure residents that emergency crews are working diligently on the scene to help contain the spill. We ask that those in the area please remain in their homes or places of business until further notice. Gloucester County officials will remain vigilant in keeping the public informed of events as they progress.

“Anyone who believes they need treatment should go to Underwood-Memorial Hospital, located at 509 North Broad Street in Woodbury. Those looking for further information can reach out to the Gloucester County Department of Health, Senior & Disability Services at 856-218-4101.”
