01 Feb: Whelan Statement On Signing Of Landmark Casino Reform Laws

ATLANTIC CITY – Senator Jim Whelan, D-Atlantic, the Chair of the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee, and co-chair of the landmark Legislative Gaming Summit which developed a game plan for casino and racetrack stability and revitalization earlier this year, issued the following statement today after the Governor signed two landmark casino reform bills in Atlantic City:

“As the economic engine for Southern New Jersey, Atlantic City’s casino industry is of vital importance, and the jobs, tax revenue and economic activity produced through casino gambling have an impact on the entire state. However, with increased competition from out-of-state gaming vendors, and with a soft economy, people are spending less money at our State’s casinos, and the entire industry is in crisis.

01 Feb: Sweeney: Atlantic City’s Engine Has Gotten A Kick-Start

TRENTON – Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Cumberland/Salem) today hailed the signing of landmark bipartisan legislation that will reposition Atlantic City’s tourism economy and business climate to protect countless jobs throughout the resort and help it compete more effectively with out-of-state casinos.

TRENTON – Senator Jeff Van Drew (D-Cape May/Cumberland/Atlantic), a member of the Legislative Gaming Summit which crafted a plan to preserve and revitalize the state’s gaming and horse racing industries, today released the following statement on legislation (S-11) he sponsored to create an Atlantic City Tourism (ACT) District and to boost marketing of the city. The bill was signed into law today by Governor Chris Christie:

TRENTON – Senator Jim Whelan, D-Atlantic, the Chair of the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee, and co-chair of the landmark Legislative Gaming Summit which developed a game plan for casino and racetrack stability and revitalization earlier this year, issued the following statement today after the Senate gave final legislative approval to a package of bills he sponsored to give Atlantic City’s casino industry the transformational reform needed to survive:

“Atlantic City’s casino industry is the lifeblood of the South Jersey economy, and a key engine in the entire State’s economic stability. However, despite their importance to our fiscal and economic well-being, New Jersey has, for far too many years, ignored the problems which have driven casinos to the brink of disaster.

15 Nov: Van Drew Bill To Increase Police Presence In Atlantic City Clears Committee

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Jeff Van Drew to increase police presence in Atlantic City by creating a Joint Law Enforcement Task Force within the New Jersey State Police was approved today by a Senate Committee.

The premise of the bill was contained in legislation introduced by Senator Van Drew in September, but was ultimately folded into a broader piece of legislation sponsored by Senate President Stephen Sweeney, Senator Jim Whelan and Van Drew. That bill (S-11) was approved today by the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee.

“I’ve always said that the future success of the gaming resort ultimately hinges on our ability to change the public perception that Atlantic City is dangerous,” said Senator Van Drew (D-Cape May/Atlantic/Cumberland). “Establishing a police task force to specifically patrol the tourism district will create a notable security presence to ensure that visitors feel safe.”

11 Jan: Prisoner Re-Entry Bills Approved By Senate

TRENTON � Bills to help rehabilitate people incarcerated in New Jersey�s state prison system and facilitate their re-entry into society were approved today by the state Senate.

One bill (A4202/S11), sponsored by Sen. Sandra Bolden Cunningham (D-Hudson) incorporates several measures to help rehabilitate inmates, with a goal of reducing criminal recidivism by making it easier for an inmate to assimilate when they leave prison and re-enter the community. It was approved 21-16 by the Senate.
