06 Feb: Buono Transparency Bill Passes Committee, Advances In Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) which would create a comprehensive, searchable online public record of state spending was unanimously approved today in the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee.

“Taxpayers deserve to know how their money is spent, especially during these tough economic times,” said Senator Buono. “Placing state expenditures under a public microscope through which New Jerseyans may investigate and understand the state’s spending and fiscal priorities will be an ally in the on-going battle against waste and corruption.”

05 Jun: Van Drew Welcomes Corzine To Sports Betting Lawsuit

TRENTON – Senator Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic, issued the following statement regarding Governor Corzine’s announcement that he will be joining in the legal effort to overturn the federal ban on sports betting, and called on legislative leaders to move sports betting legislation in New Jersey to speed up the legal proceedings:

“I applaud Governor Corzine for lending his support to legal efforts, led by Senator Ray Lesniak and myself, to overturn the federal ban on sports betting. New Jersey’s gaming industry, and the larger tourism sector that depends on the vitality of that industry, cannot afford to fall behind other states in the nation when it comes to a legalized sports book.

19 May: Lesniak Testimony On Sports Betting In New Jersey

TRENTON – Senator Raymond J. Lesniak, D-Union, the sponsor of legislation to pave the way for sports betting as a revenue source for New Jersey, issued the following testimony in support of his proposal, which was discussed in the Senate Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee today:

“In 1992 Congress passed a law that made residents in New Jersey and 45 other states second class citizens. And when it allowed sports betting in Nevada and three other states, while giving New Jersey a one year window to adopt sports betting or forever be banned from permitting it, Congress did more than make us second class citizens. It violated the Constitution of the United States of America.

27 Dec: Rice Measure To Take Back School Districts Becomes Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Ronald L. Rice which establishes a new performance monitoring system for public schools and leads the way towards creating independence for school districts that are now under the State’s control became law yesterday.

“The current system that New Jersey uses to monitor student performance has made it nearly impossible for school districts to ever get out from under the State’s control,” said Senator Rice, D-Essex. “It’s evident that the old evaluations system is not working. To truly enhance student achievement we must allow the districts to take on more responsibility and play a major role in determining how to better serve the specific needs of their students.”
