10 Jul: Sweeney Legislation That Will Help Clean Up Contaminated Sites Signed Into Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senate President Steve Sweeney that will ensure the clean up of contaminated sites in New Jersey has been signed into law. The Senate President announced his intention to sponsor the legislation earlier this year in front of the shuttered Sunoco Coastal Eagle Point Refinery in West Deptford.

The law, S-1460, requires that any property tax refund awarded to an industrial property that has been totally or partially decommissioned and is subject to federal or state orders for remediation go directly to the state Department of Environmental Protection, to be used for environmental cleanup of the location. Any money leftover after the cleanup is complete will be returned to the owner of the property. The law also authorizes a municipality to assess an annual charge on the owner of the contaminated property to cover remediation costs.

12 Aug: Sacco-Adler Bill To Expand Overseas Voting Rights For Nj Citizens Signed Into Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Nicholas Sacco and John Adler that will allow New Jersey residents living overseas, including those in the military, to vote by absentee ballot in all State and local elections was signed into law today by the Governor.

“For too long, New Jersey’s election laws have lagged far behind the state of current technology,” said Senator Sacco, D-Hudson and Bergen. “With the prevalence of e-mail and other forms of electronic transmission, State election regulators can easily and cheaply communicate with potential voters, wherever they are in the world. Thanks to this new law, we can increase participation in the democratic process in New Jersey, particularly for those in our military serving overseas.”

08 May: Sacco/Adler Bill Would Expand Overseas Voting Rights Of New Jersey Residents

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Nicholas Sacco and John Adler that would allow New Jersey residents living overseas, including those in the military, to vote by absentee ballot in all State and local elections was approved by the Senate State Government Committee today.

“New Jersey’s overseas absentee ballot program is outdated and disenfranchises far too many New Jersey voters, especially our servicemen and women,” said Senator Sacco, D-Hudson. “Current technology can make it very easy to get ballots into the hands of voters, so it’s up to us to make sure that they get every opportunity to have a say in what’s going on at home while they are away.”
