08 Mar: Gordon & Weinberg: Port Authority Bill Takes Concerns To Heart, But Won’t Compromise Accountability

TRENTON – Senator Bob Gordon and Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (both D-Bergen) said today that new legislation they are sponsoring to rein in the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will heed some of the concerns brought to their attention by the agency’s leadership, but that they will not compromise on their goal of bringing greater accountability to the multi-billion-dollar agency.

The Senate Transportation Committee today released the bill (S-1761), which maintains the needs for annual audits of the Port Authority’s books, among other strong accountability measures.

The new bill would require 72-hour notice of any public hearing and would require at least two-thirds of the agency’s commissioners be present. The prior bill (S-1115) called for five days notice and would have mandated every commissioner be present for a public hearing to be held; the Port Authority wanted neither provision.

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Joseph Coniglio which will require the establishment of violence prevention programs in health care facilities in order to protect workers from violence was signed into law by Governor Corzine today.

“Working in a health care setting can be dangerous,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, the Chair of the Senate Health Committee, and a member of the Budget Panel. “Health care workers face threats from certain patients or those suffering from varying degrees of substance abuse, and are at ground zero of the gang wars which are devastating our urban communities in New Jersey. Through this law, we will be doing all we can to ensure health care workers are equipped with the knowledge they need to stay safe in the workplace.”

17 Dec: Vitale-Coniglio Bill To Require Health Care Facilities To Adopt Violence Prevention Programs Approved By Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Joseph Coniglio which would require the establishment of violence prevention programs in health care facilities in order to protect workers from violence was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 38-0, receiving final legislative approval.

“A hospital or other health care facility can be an extraordinarily dangerous work environment,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, the Chair of the Senate Health Committee, and a member of the Budget Panel. “Staffers provide care for patients suffering from dementia or delirium, as well as those with substance abuse problems or violent tendencies. Health care workers must be trained in working with violent individuals, and taught the appropriate skills to avoid becoming a target for violence.”

03 Dec: Vitale-Coniglio Bill To Require Health Care Facilities To Adopt Violence Prevention Programs Approved By Budget Panel

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Joseph Coniglio which would require the establishment of violence prevention programs in health care facilities in order to protect workers from violence was unanimously approved by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee today.

“Often, health care workers find themselves in dangerous situations, simply for doing their medical duty,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, the Chair of the Senate Health Committee, and a member of the Budget Panel. “They often find themselves treating patients with varying levels of dementia or psychosis, or are thrust into the middle of conflict when providing care for violent criminals. This bill would ensure that health care facilities are prepared to handle threats and violence from patients directed at health care workers.”
