16 Dec: Weinberg Bill To Update NJ Crime Victim Compensation Law Approved

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Loretta Weinberg which would make extend certain deadlines for victims of violent crime and their families to apply to the State program to compensate them for their losses was approved by the Senate and Assembly yesterday, receiving final legislative approval.

“In New Jersey, when crime is perpetrated on an innocent individual, we have a mechanism to help make that person or their grieving family members whole,” said Senator Weinberg, D-Bergen. “While the Victims of Crime Compensation Office has helped victims and their families pick up the pieces over the last forty years, the law’s strict filing deadlines sometimes limit the agency’s effectiveness. By giving recovering victims and grieving families more time to file for benefits, we’re allowing the promise of the VCCO to be realized.”

27 Dec: Turner Bill To Curb Internet Access Of Sexual Predators Signed Into Law

TRENTON – Legislation co-sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner that will make New Jersey a national leader in the fight against Internet sex predators was signed into law today by Governor Richard J. Codey. “The ease with which anyone can hide their true identity on the Internet means that we need to be especially vigilant in monitoring and limiting its used by known sex offenders,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “Megan’s law helps parents to protect their children from sex offenders and this law will allow us to extend those protections to the online world.”

Under the new law, formerly bill S-1979, any individual convicted of committing a sex offense while using a computer will be prohibited from using a computer or accessing the Internet for their entire period of parole. Additionally, these restrictions could be placed on other sex offenders, regardless of whether they used a computer to facilitate their crime at the discretion of the State Parole Board.

17 Dec: Full Senate Finalizes Codey Bill Cracking Down On Internet Predators

TRENTON — Senate President Richard J. Codey (D-Essex) today praised the full Senate for unanimously approving bill S1979, which will give New Jersey some of the toughest tools in the nation to crack down on the growing threat of Internet predators.

“I can’t stress this enough – for all the benefits that the Internet brings us, we need to be equally wary of its burdens,” said Sen. Codey. “There are a lot of individuals out there who have no reservations about using the Internet to prey on children and deprive them of their innocence. Even the most vigilant parents don’t have eyes in the back of their head. So the best way to protect our kids is to educate them, stay on top of their Internet activity, and turn this bill into law.”

Codey (D-Essex) applauded the Assembly Judiciary Committee for approving bills S1979/A3905 and S1978/A4096, paving the way for final passage of legislation that will give New Jersey some of the toughest tools in the nation to crack down on the growing threat of Internet predators.

“I applaud the Assembly for going at this threat with the same tenacity that the Senate has employed,” said Sen. Codey. “Every day we see reports on television of sick people taking advantage of the Internet to prey on our children. The time has come to pull the plug on these criminals.
